I'm still waiting for the day they make a biopic where Kyle MacLachlan plays office supply magnate W.B. Mason in the same tradition of satires of capitalism as the Coens' Hudsocker Proxy or Orson Welles's Citizen Kane

Most self-confident imposter syndrome dream: legendary French nat team players were doing a talent showcase in a crowded stadium. I was a spy posing as Zidane, awkwardly kicking the ball around next to Mbappé fearing that the ONLY way my cover would be blown was if people knew my jersey was fake 🤣

In our case we used Michael Mann's typologies of states in order to show that the type of rule states built using a mixture of despotic (power over someone) and infrastructural power (power through someone) predicted vaccination success independently of other pertinent variables 3/5.

As a mere sociologist who researches capitalist interest, this does not seem to be a great way to create the kind of business friendly environment that would create jobs for Americans

Americans rushed to import "Gold, equipment for AI data centers and other products" before tariffs kicked in . Wait....!!!?? Why is wine not explicitly on the list? What have I been missing ?

To put satirical magazines' significance for Turkish politics into perspective. A sample of covers of magazines from various periods with political content.

AI scrapes the Internet that's probably dominated by news about Ed Sheeran and not the X-ray Specs, Public Enemy or Wet Leg. Of course it's going to generate a sterile looking jam band when asked to create a band. It couldn't even imagine the f.ing Police.

Did my ballot. A couple of thoughts:
-This has been a great quarter century; I could have made 3-4 different lists, having omitted personal favorites is anxiety-inducing.
-Everyone on here has great taste in film
-Distributors worried about movie-going can definitely capitalize on something here 1/

Just joined the no kings protest in Poughkeepsie with my Bruce sign. It is already a mile long and still growing

Ep. 2 of The Studio where a movie exec (Seth Rogan) insists on visiting director Sarah Polley on set and is convinced he's not disruptive as she only has minutes to complete a scene with a single, tracking shot before magic hour is over is an amazing study of entitlement: cringe comedy classic.

In all fairness, it is very well known that penguins can be quite obsessed and picky with their pebbles and that they can be hard to please customers

Our cats Destry and Marlowe were nowhere to be seen for a few hours, not asking for food, not trying to get into some closed closet or snuggling up. Mystery solved

Certain decisions are too important to be left to higher-ed administrators who take the tasks they are assigned to do too literally. Such a missed opportunity: Duke University could've leveraged White Lotus's popularity to showcase its faculty's work on gender, privilege, and white collar crime.

After taking his testimony prosecutors have decided to arrest the Istanbul mayor highly predicted to pose a challenge in the next Turkish presidential elections. To make sure that an appointed trustee doesn't take over city hall, protesters are helping protect the building

An indication of how big the protests in Turkey and the police response are: guest panelists on a news shows are trickling in very slowly because the roads are blocked

Almodóvar's interest in strong female voices led members of the audience to reflect in the Q&A w author Sigrid Nunez on whether the type of compassion shown in the film is possible btw men. Nunez agreed w/ one comment pointing that gay men of Almodóvar's generation went through this because of AIDS

2 gems if you're interested in reading on the relation bw capitalism and democracy/authoritarianism from a historical perspective bc of Tech's far right tendencies: Hirschman's "Passions and the Interests" famously explores arguments the enlightenment had on how markets constrain absolutist states.

An argument for independent record stores. Seen at the French retail behemoth Leclerc's bookstore: a music section that can only be described as "2 very famous black men and a black adjacent famous white man lumped together w/o alphabetizing cause they emit similar vibes for smalltown France." 🤷

As my colleagues and I were commiserating about AI and grading, we came across one of its positive byproducts making me sound cooler than I am to none Turkish speakers: email apps started to translate my name to its literal meaning "revolution" -yes, my parents named me that and I'm a sociologist.

Whenever I try to make sense of some aspect of post-WW2 Western Germany, I try to remember that, like any toy, Playmobils are supposed to be aspirational (?)

If Madame Bovary were written today I feel that she would once in a while upgrade to
Premium Economy on trips she felt hopeful on. I also feel that the experience would invariably leave her feeling dejected.
