I've got the Katz. It's decent. I didn't know about the Deakins book, so I need to pick that up. If I could recommend one key filmmaking read - it's On Film-Making by Alexander Mackendrick.

I can see that it suggests that Victor is tying the two women together in his head, but we barely get to know the mother before she dies and Elizabeth is clearly an independent agent who resists that comparison. The problem with Elizabeth is we don't know why that is.

But her mother and Elizabeth weren't one character and it's a disservice to think of them that way.
