I wonder if the list of states whose licenses are easily converted isn't also a list of states US service members stationed in Germany are most likely to be from? Service members who lobbied state officials to get on the list?

Ideally no US driver's licenses should be convertible to a German license because standards here are so low, but the issue here is that drivers from some states, like CA and NY have to go through the whole process but drivers from Alabama and Texas do not.

It looks like a collection of all the people from college who tried to get a professor fired for making them read a book that talked about slavery or jim crow.

The people most inclined to see it are the people least likely to tolerate an accent.

If only red dwarf fans could afford it.

It's also not an effective excuse after you've hit another car. If you drive into another car "I didn't see you" or "the sun was in my eyes" is not going to prevent you from being held at fault, but if you hit a person on foot or on a bicycle those are the magic words.

A nimby who thinks that the insurance costs of living in fire prone areas need to be more fully socialized. Sounds like an arsonist who got into politics to support her hobby, or rather have other people support it. Perhaps pyromaniac is more accurate term here, but arsonist seems right.

It's usually a parent or relative at the wheel, on "private property" (even if it really isn't) and is such a tragedy that LE try to keep it quiet.
December 16, 2025 at 4:41 AM
I was under the impression that these sorts of tragedies are lot more common than we think. It often happens in driveways or on public property directly in front of the driveway, which is treated by police as an extension private property affecting reporting.

These are guys who watched movies set in Nazi occupied Europe and identified with the soldier who said "Ausweis bitte."

Now if only the world new about unmarked crosswalks and a pedestrian's right of way in them and the police (or a different agency that enforces traffic laws) would act like unmarked crosswalks exist and force drivers to obey the law. I can't get drivers to stop at a marked crosswalk with HAWK beacon

I've seen a few right hook collisions in these situations, solo crashes where the bike rider swerves to the right to avoid a car and falls over and a lot of near collisions. Drivers turning right on red set you up to be hit by those drivers who floor it the moment the light turns green.
December 13, 2025 at 6:42 AM
They all believe they have to press beg buttons. Some get up against the curb to do so. Most get on the sidewalk ramp and press the ped. beg button. They take off the moment the light turns green just as they are being over taken by drivers turning right.

In my area - Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Santa Ana. I rarely see other bicycle riders either stay in bike lanes at intersections or position themselves to the left of or behind cars turning right. Everyone moves to the right of right turning cars.
December 13, 2025 at 6:37 AM
The CA DMV tells you to take the lane at every intersection to avoid being right hooked. They present a simplified version of the intersection. One car and one bicycle rider and everyone does what they are supposed to do. Not how it works on 50-60mph highways where most bike lanes are found.
December 13, 2025 at 6:34 AM
CA drivers make both CA and OR style right hand turns at intersections with bike lanes - whatever suits them at the moment. If a bicycle rider stays in the bike lane at a red light they will try to get you to move. If there isn't enough room to pass they will still try.
December 13, 2025 at 6:31 AM
As a basic principle - in a situation where cars and bicycles can in theory share space - a bicycle rider going straight should not be to the right of a car turning right. In practice this means that drivers get to use the bike lane and 99% of bicycle riders use the crosswalk.

This is at the edge of Long Beach City College. The sidewalk (mostly wandering park sidewalks) is considered a bicycle facility here. A student hit by a driver while riding to school on the "cycle path" would be blamed for the collision.
December 12, 2025 at 4:31 PM
I used to live in OR where that was also the case. CA bike laws were written with the influence of vehicular cyclists and "savvy cyclists" in the 70s who were interested only in the bicycle riders they thought should exist (few and very skilled) rather than the people who exist in the real world.
December 12, 2025 at 4:15 PM
A lot of existing "cycle track" designs are basically just sidewalks with painted lines. At intersections they use a shared crosswalk. A bicycle riders who rides through the crosswalk there will be blamed for their injuries or death if they don't dismount and walk, adding insult to injury.
December 12, 2025 at 4:11 PM
For the vast majority of bicycle riders in the postwar sprawl and stroads that characterize CA, the sidewalk and crosswalks are the bike lanes, regardless of whether or not there are painted lanes. The design of streets sets them up for right hook collisions and blames them when they are hit.
