“Keep reading.” Bram pressed onward. Ob’ren— “They spelled your name wrong”— trembled with lust, gripping his weapon tightly even as his body longed to wrap his fingers around something entirely different. “Bram,” he whimpered. “Please. I can’t take it any longer.” Bram stepped forward and tipped Ob’ren’s chin up with one finger. A lurid grin spread across his face. “Promise you’ll be a good boy and I’ll give you anything you want.” Bram was practically radiating embarrassment and slammed the pamphlet shut in his hand. He remembered the logo on the cover now. It was on every single one of Mina’s favored smut stories. “I can’t read this.” “Why not?” O’bren shot up from where he lay and pouted. “It was just getting to the good part.” “Bren,” he insisted. “It’s—” “It’s not the most accurate filth I’ve ever run into I suppose,” O’bren shrugged, unaffected. Bram was about to die. How in the hells was he so nonchalant? “I’m not a lancer, for one, and I don’t think you could grin—what was it?” “—Luridly.” “Luridly even if you tried,” he finished. “They also got the dynamics all wrong. You’re the one with the praise kink, not me, though I suppose it makes sense they might think—” “Bren!” Bram gawped, mortified.

“Your bus is canceled, isn’t it?” Bram guesses. Bren drops his head in annoyance, already knowing where this is going. “It is. If you loan me your umbrella I can just—” He shoots him a look that stops him dead in his tracks, and Bren relents despite himself. Maybe he is being ridiculous. He watches him silently open his umbrella, then walks with him across the empty parking lot to the passenger’s side of his truck. Bram opens the door for him and waits for him to climb inside. “Princess treatment and all,” he says, teasing so he doesn’t feel the weight. Bram smirks before shutting the door behind him. Rain taps against the silent cab and as he watches him round the vehicle, he feels stupid for having denied him. This is already better. Even more so when he joins him, starts the engine, and, after a few moments, warm air begins to flood in. The windows immediately fog up, obscuring the darkened parking lot. Trapping them in a tiny space alone together for the first time in two weeks. If Bram’s ever going to bring it up, he’s going to do it now where no one can hear, private as he is. “We’ll have to wait a second,” is all he says. He reaches across the space between them and turns up the heater. Bren brushes a few stray drops of water from his cheek. “You’re bad at letting people take care of you.” “I just didn’t want you to have to go out of your way for me,” he sighs, ignoring the accusation as much as he can. Bram isn’t incorrect, but that doesn’t mean he has to say it out loud. “That’s all.” His voice is warm as the afternoon sun when he says, “I like going out of my way for you.”

“Cirina Khagan!” Batu called out sharply. She turned to the source of the noise and her expression shifted from confusion to soft recognition upon seeing the three of them approaching. She bid farewell to the girls and quickly trotted over to meet them halfway. “Lord Hien!” Cirina beamed. “And Bram. I am relieved to see you’ve arrived safely.” “It is good to see you well, Cirina Khagan,” Hien bowed formally. “You have my gratitude for hosting this diplomatic visit. It would appear we arrived just in time.” “The Dusk Rite is just two days away,” she said pleasantly. “I hope you will stay for the festivities after our talks. I know Batu would be thrilled to have you watch him fight in the tournament.” The boy’s head bobbed in enthusiastic agreement. “Please say you’ll stay, Hien!” Cirina nudged him lightly. “That’s Lord Hien now, Batu.” Hien shrugged with light-hearted amusement. “Who are we to stand on formality, when we were friends and naught else only a few seasons passed? Hien will serve just fine. Though…” He winked at the boy. “Maybe not in front of my council.” The boy smirked and bowed very formally, in a mockery of reverence. “As you will it, my lord.” They both burst into laughter. Bram’s heart grew three sizes in an instant, filled to bursting with the certainty that Hien would one day make an excellent father. Even Cirina affectionately obscured a giggle. It was good to be back in a place where the trappings of royalty mattered far less—where Hien could merely be himself, and poke fun at the absurdity of his station.

“This is nice,” Bren says and runs his fingers down the front of Bram’s new jacket, over leather and metal studs, and only stops when he reaches his belt to curl them under the edge. He gives it an insistent little tug to draw him nearer and Bram obeys like a celestial body pulled into orbit, forever at his beck and call. “Someone very talented made this.” Bren smooths his hands back up his chest and thumbs at the stitching on the lapels; he’s examining the craftsmanship, being a craftsman himself, but Bram knows him well enough to recognize when he’s also angling for a kiss. Just for the thrill of the chase, he decides to make him work for it just a little harder and merely grips one of his wrists to thumb at his pulse, light and ticklish, to the tune of an imperceptible shiver. “I figured you’d like it.”
