There is clearly an argument about how the lack of clear regulations results in inconsistent, and sometimes unnecessary implementations and duplicative costs.. but without a lot of context it's hard to buy into arguments like "barriers to stop people walking across busways and tracks are silly".

This is the same city that operated a busway without bollards at the ends of platforms for decades, and that ended in tragedy.

When it's easy imagine a tenuous safety argument for these kinds of barriers, calling them overbuilt is not a winning approach to an argument for affordability.

Their primary purpose at bus stations is to discourage people from crossing the busway, which would be a safety hazard. Most of the stations don't have fare gates at all.
