Under low lighting and between scattered pink and purple balloons, DePaul students mirrored instructions for dancing bachata. DePaul finally beat Marquette for the first time since 2022, but it came at a turbulent time for the team. The win was secured just a day after three former DePaul basketball players were indicted and now face charges for sports gambling and wire fraud charges.  Head coach Chris Holtmann addressed the fallout of the indictments in his post-game press conference. 

The DePaul Blue Demons (4-15 overall, 1-7 Big East) are set to face the Seton Hall Pirates (12-5 overall, 6-2 Big East) at 2 p.m. at Wintrust Arena. DePaul’s last home game was a thrilling 80-77 comeback victory over Georgetown where the Blue Demons erased two separate double-digit deficits. In their most recent game, a Jan. 13 visit to Xavier, DePaul was unable to close out their 12-point lead deep into the third quarter, ultimately falling on the road by the score of 71-61.

For Christian Groves, a Bears fan born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, this season has felt different — even if expectations remain relatively low. Groves, a DePaul senior, said he has been a Bears fan his whole life, but years of disappointment have taught him not to get his hopes up too high. “Being a Bears fan is interesting because, even though I’d always want them to win, I never really expect them to,” said Groves, a political science major. 

The DePaul Blue Demons (2-4 in Big East play, 10-7 overall) host the Marquette Golden Eagles (1-6 in Big East play, 6-12 overall). The Blue Demons were on a two-game winning streak thanks to wins against Xavier and Georgetown, but fell to UConn 72-60 on Saturday, Jan. 10. According to ESPN Analytics (as of 9:50 a.m. CT), the Blue Demons have a 56.7% chance of winning tonight's game.

DePaul men’s basketball head coach Chris Holtmann announced today that junior forward Jeremy Lorenz will miss the rest of the 2025-26 basketball season. Junior guard Kate Novik was named to the Big East Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday. This marks the second time that the Belarus native has taken home the weekly award this season. Her first selection was on Dec. 15. In DePaul’s 80-77 win over Georgetown on Saturday, the team’s only game of the week, Novik led her squad with 19 points and 10 assists, marking her third double-double of the season. 

For Chicago Bears fans, the idea of playoff football has started to feel more like a memory than an expectation. That feeling shifted when the Chicago Bears hired head coach Ben Johnson prior to the 2025 campaign.  During the first few weeks of training camp, that renewed sense of hope could have easily been mistaken for delusion. Then the results started pouring in, with the biggest win being Saturday’s wild-card game heart-stopping victory against the Green Bay Packers. 

How winter break can feel endless one year and just right the next. 

Tony Anaya is a huge fan of the Chicago Bears, Bulls and Cubs. There are many rivals of all three teams, but Anaya says he especially hates the Green Bay Packers.  “They own us,” said Anaya, a DePaul graduate student who grew up in Chicago.  That may have been the case then, but it certainly isn’t now. This year the Bears have won two out of their three matchups against the Packers.

For Lyllieanna Herrera, a DePaul junior, the New Year arrived with the crunch of green grapes and the boom of fireworks. Crouched beneath a table as the clock struck midnight, Herrera began to think about her hopes for every month of 2026. For each one she had, she ate a grape. The tradition, practiced in Spain and throughout Latin America, is believed to help bring good fortune.

When I joined La DePaulia a year ago, I hardly knew anything about the publication’s history.  Our founder, Hillary Flores, created a Spanish section of The DePaulia to make sure coverage of the Latine community was done thoroughly, through times of happiness or distress. By 2022, La DePaulia shifted from a Spanish-language publication to a bilingual one to reach a wider audience.
