I would be remiss not to highlight today's announcement from Valve :) Essentially a Steamdeck on your face, for VR & Flat (with PC streaming). Hits many of the right notes & should make many Enthusiasts very happy. I'll offer more insight in the shorter-term future ;)

Oh look, even more GROSS. It will be interesting watching the systemic backtrack as the bubble bursts, the fomo quiets, and the cultural zeitgeist around anti-human, unaligned AI usage peaks.
Krafton is now an 'AI-first company,' will spend $70 million on a GPU cluster to 'serve as the foundation for accelerating the implementation of agentic AI'
The new strategy represents "a complete reorganization of the company's operational development system, placing AI at the center of problem solving."

The end result of not including VR developers/studios/titles (the domain experts of the last decade). A VR device pretending to be an AR device with no incentives, market, or cohesive strategy to bring XR expertise into a future Apple XR landscape. Tail chasing at its worst.
Apple Reportedly "Pauses" Vision Air To Prioritize Smart Glasses With Display

A sobering interview with Dr. Roman Yampolskiy regarding AI safety (or lack thereof) & some VERY near future impacts/predictions. A good primer for those who don't understand the deeper existential outcomes. And a stark warning to those pursuing Super Intelligence.

Eeesh...I mean, I've been through periods of "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all" but this is getting ridiculous!

People...its simple:

1. There's only 2 modalities; VR & AR (MR will be thrown away when devices lose that distinction).
2. Reality is malleable, users will move between these 2 modalities based on wants/needs in-the-moment.
3. Both are complimentary mediums, one no less important than the other.

So...if Universal Basic Income is the antidote to "strong AI" & robotics taking over all human activities, lets do an experiment! Of the small handful of corporations looking to control this space; would you be willing to pay users to use your current models? Its basically the same social agreement.

This is cool but can someone tell me why I want to see my dirty dishes in the sink while I play? Reskinning my home entirely in a spatially aware way is always going to be cooler imho. Everything else just feels gimmicky.
Mixed Reality's Best Laser Tag-style Multiplayer Gets Better Spatial Stability, New Enemies & More
Spatial Ops (2024) is a bit like laser tag for Quest, letting you set up barriers and squad up with your friends for everything from room-scale to arena-scale mixed reality shootouts. Now, developer Resolution Games released an update today that brings more stability to co-located gameplay, more enemies, support for bHaptics gear, and more. Called ‘Pulse […]

"Augments" won't really be a thing until we're wearing all-day peripherals (or close to it). And even then, as utilitarian/necessary spatial widgets are for MR/AR, they just aren't that sexy imho.

9 days ago my family (& 2 sets of grandparents) evacuated due to wildfire. It was a deeply destabilizing & humbling experience. The return order came yesterday. Grateful to the fire fighters in ways I can't describe.

In the midst of that we went to NIN! Thanks to Trent Reznor & NIN for the levity.

I feel like the "theater space" is a well established trope bringing folks comfort, nostalgia, spectacle, etc. Nailing that means walking a more traditional/grounded presentation. This futuristic "couches-in-the-round", seems like its missing the consumer mark.

The most frustrating thing about making games is how few you can ship in one lifetime. 2-5 years invested, up against time, resources, team, market fit, and unity of vision. Your hope? That launch isn't too buggy & its shape is something you can be proud of. Learning from failure is often a luxury.
