Extremely sad to hear of the death of Nakadai Tatsuya, one of the great actors in cinema. I was honored to bring him to Yale in 2016 (photo), interview him on camera, and visit his acting school Mumeijuku. He was supremely devoted to the act of acting and will be sorely missed.

Perhaps one of the first No Kings rallies took place in Tokyo on the 18th, though it was called a No Tyranny rally. Several hundred gathered outside of Shinjuku Station. This is just the start. Hope you all attend your rallies in the States on October 18.

Shocked to hear of the death of Oki Hiroyuki, one of the pioneer queer filmmakers in Japan. He was only 61. Working in a variety of media and genres, from experimental and documentary film to performance art, Oki-san was a daring artist who made the body both the subject and the method of his art.

Delightful time yesterday at the Ofudamaki お札まき festival at Yasaka Shrine 八坂神社 in Totsuka 戸塚. Going back about 300 years, this very local festival features men in women's kimono scattering good health charms around the neighborhood.

Had a wonderful time at Tamagawa Daifuku's rokyoku show at Mokubatei. Guests were rakugoka Tatekawa Shiramon and Tatekawa Kashime. Daifuku performed another edition of Yamada Yoji's Tora-san films. BTW, this was all programmed by an ambitious teenager (pictured)!

We'll be putting on Verbal Arts of Japan II at Yale March 30, 2025, featuring rakugo (San'yutei Hakucho, Ryutei Komichi), kodan (Kanda Yoko), and animal impersonations (Edoya Nekohachi). It's free and in Japanese with English subs! (The group will go to UChicago and UCLA afterwards.)

A happy new year to everyone. With a very tough 2024, we can only hope 2025 will not be any worse. We celebrate a Japanese new year with osechi cuisine.

One way we celebrate a Japanese New Year is to make and eat Toshikoshi Soba on New Year’s Eve.

When outside Japan, I watch rakugo/落語 online when I can. It's hard because of the time difference, but some shows of Shofukutei Tama/笑福亭たま start at 10am in Osaka, which is reasonable where I am. The December 21 show was great, featuring Tama dancing and fighting as he narrated Kokurabune.

Top 10 films in Japan BO for 2024 are shaping up and it looks like not one live-action foreign film made it (2 animated films did). This is probably a first. Hollywood just cannot break into the Japanese market.

Hanzo reacting to Trump’s cabinet appointments?

Thrilled to see all the new followers. Sorry If I can't keep up in following back. I work on mostly Japanese film and media, including TV, and find myself increasingly immersed in comedy (rakugo). I believe my cat Hanzo is more famous than I am.

The NY Times finally does a long article on Donald Trump's severe cognitive decline. I hope they repeat it everyday like they did with Biden.

Caught the opening day of The Art of the Benshi tour at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. With 3 benshi performing four different films, accompanied by a 5-person music ensemble, it was a truly special experience. Check out The Art of the Benshi tour if it is coming near you. artofthebenshi.org
