Blind loyalty to one’s parents (or family in general) is something that to me always seems to be brought up in negative examples: the supposed requirement of children to overlook harmful behaviour from their relatives. In other words: it’s little more than a shield to enable toxic behaviour.

I'm so tired of the assumption in society that any relationship, including a family relationship, is an obligatory one.

Parents don't own their children or have any claim on their time or affection. A positive relationship is built, not earned.

To a toxic or abusive parent: a therapist is a faceless, anonymous stranger and the perfect scapegoat. They can't imagine the idea that their own behaviour is at fault, it's so much easier to cast blame on a nameless entity than it is to confront one's own behaviour and relationships.

I think the answer might be different when talking about figures directly involved in policy and Republican leadership and the like who had a direct hand in shaping the modern GOP.

When people have been a participant in fascism and authoritarianism, there’s a tendency to deny and downplay.

So many of these long-time figures involved in Republican politics and policy are only now speaking up after they are out of power and lacking any contemporary position or influence.

I suspect this isn't a genuine crisis of conscience so much as trying to distance themselves from their creation.
