I haven't seen the show, but from online comments about this topic, apparently the book character's gender isn't specified.

Ppl also theorize that (if the char is male) it could be a case of "hasn't figured it out yet" and/or "it's different with fictional characters"

That is interesting, makes me wonder if the "self shipping art" was a modified bit, cuz it's literally Amity shipping herself with a male book character

This goes for Princess Bubblegum and Marceline too cuz they've literally both had male partners in the show, like on-screen and everything but are still lesbians in the eyes of the fandom

I've watched and enjoyed shows that look way worse because the story is what matters. Good animation can definitely elevate it, but it's not the end-all requirement for me

Saying this in the face of One Punch Man S3 getting super low ratings and no one has really confirmed to me why it is other than the animation is kinda bland
