My big piece of advice would be to go around the color wheel, and not straight through. Yes orange and blue can be in a sunset, but orange + blue makes grey. So I would have the gradient go from orange -> red -> purple -> blue, or just a subset of those transitions.

Beat em up that's literally just the mandatory elevator stage. Different missions can be different sky scrapers. The elevator fills to capacity at each floor so if you play well, you get more goons and points each floor.

As a guy making a DMC-like, it still totally applies. If the basic 3 hit combo doesn't feel fun to hit, adding more and more on top isn't gonna help. But as you add the crazier moves, you definitely have to circle back and add some love to the basics.
