it's hard for a lot of modern devs to pick up the duke tools i think. I tried a while back but it's pretty far removed from even Doom's improvements. There's also the whole problem with build itself being in a weird licensing hell and not a lot of programmers around willing to rewrite stuff.

i feel ya. Already was feeling sick of life by 25. I think part of it is just a mood thing

also i retain what i've said before about big jam projects, and why you should play more solo releases. Is because i tend to find better examples of pacing and difficulty in maps that had more time to polish and deliver a more interesting experience than most jam maps built for a deadline

don't think there's anything wrong with making easy maps tbh, i think my problem with a lot of doom and quake these days is how ppl feel the need to stretch on their maps to infinity. Everything takes an eternity to complete these days and that's not something i ever recall enjoying that much.

interesting, can i ask what about it did you think was weird? idk i guess i came into the series pretty late since i started with Kings field 3 and then went back, the mechanics in these games have always been kind of esoteric i guess.

well, this is more of that arcane dimensions style. Not bad but i kinda wish people would play more standalone releases instead of map jams
January 8, 2026 at 3:35 PM
did you play Lunacid? i think that one's at the top of my list. I suppose i'll have to add this to my wishlist
January 8, 2026 at 3:33 PM
oh i didn't know that was the exact timeframe. well it's only 4 years earlier anyway
January 7, 2026 at 4:36 AM
You don't have Standalone Complex here, Shame on your sir. I'll be revoking your weeb card
January 7, 2026 at 4:05 AM
it sure gets used a lot still, it's kinda the middle of the road between godot and unity and is easily still very popular among devs
January 3, 2026 at 5:50 AM
i did primarily try 2021.3 since it's the last version since the changes and yeah, it will not fucking run properly.

sad too cause there's a lot of older things i wanted to use and now can't. i wonder how support is on later versions like 2022.2 and beyond
