Day 1 saw opening remarks from the SBSTTA Chair, CBD Executive Secretary, and Panama’s Environment Minister. Countries shared priorities on capacity building, to strengthen the science–policy interface.

Day 1 closed with discussions on the IPBES work programme and on biodiversity and climate linkages, which will continue throughout SBSTTA27. We will continue contributing to the dialogue this week, working to ensure that the #DeepSea is part of the GBF’s implementation story. 🌊

Our DOSI delegates, Anna Metaxas and Eugenia Thomas, took part in side events focused on strengthening the scientific basis of CBD processes, including discussions on how to ensure that indigenous and local knowledge is integrated alongside scientific expertise.

Member States shared their progress and priorities under Agenda Item 3, highlighting the need for:
🔹 integration of diverse data sources,
🔹 capacity building (especially for SIDS and developing countries), and
🔹 improved monitoring to identify and close key scientific gaps.
