Visibility was excellent and Captain Martin believed he could still just make out the tips of the masts of the Erebus and Terror on the horizon until either 29 or 31 July 1845. After that the ships disappeared. And that was the last the outside world ever saw of Commander James Fitzjames.

At some point, the predictable problem of sailing on a small ship in the company of a large carnivorous cat manifested itself. One day, perhaps when he had his back to it and stooped, the cheetah attacked Fitzjames. It grabbed him from behind and would not let go until ‘beaten with an iron bar’. After this the pet had to go, and it is a sign that Fitzjames had completely recovered from his bullet wounds that this assault did him no lasting damage.

John Boyd was cast as captain of the guard and Fitzjames was cast, in drag, in the lead role as Fadladinida, Queen of Queerummania. Fitzjames spent the whole day ‘getting rigged for the Queen… in women’s clothes all bediamonded and bepearled’. The large athletic officer must have made a fine sight as he ostentatiously sat through the first amateur performance of The Heir at Law by officers of the garrison, which he watched from a box among the audience.
