perhaps pillowshading was considered across the board early on as a way to save memory and simplify the work for the artists and was kept for particular cases that were most fitting

with the boo, i always felt the pillowshading helped to fake translucency. The biggest mismatch here is probably the small dino whose name i forget, but it’s important to note that Mario has colored outlines too, just with more contrast

in the urchin’s case, the shine on the ends of the spikes emphasizes them as more dangerous and the contrast catches ur attention; then i can see the thought process to balancing the shading, not to mention the fact it’s possibly mirrored to save memory anyway lol

I wish the contrast was a bit lower overall, as that’s part of why I like it better at 480p, but i’m enjoying it a lot and it does feel like re-experiencing the game in a sense

the frame drops are pretty excessive, more so than I expected, but frame drops don’t bother me so much anymore. though I am about to enter blighttown so we’ll see! some visual tricks function a bit better with the old lighting system too like in the sewer areas.

also i’ve been playing on my ps2 and the colors look gorgeous at 240p and with the filtering. I really could not imagine playing at higher resolution, let alone 4k, because it’d make the world feel way more flat and… tangible i guess

its kind of crazy how stressed and helpless i felt when i was knocked to the ground by the shadow monsters that beforehand didn’t pose any threat to me. looking for the little puzzle solutions that are simple in hindsight feels trial-and-error enough to make the world much bigger than you find it is
