Pres. Kornbluth articulates such moral clarity in this rejection of the proposed “compact”:

“the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone”

Of the 4000 researchers at NIH, only 20% are tenured. They’re going to fire all the rest as their contracts come up for renewal, absolutely decimating research at the NIH. This is catastrophic, not just for Americans, but for the whole world.

$1 invested in #NIH returns $2.5 to #economy
Cutting IDC is like funding firefighters salaries but removing from fire dept budgets funding for training, water, gas, electricity, fire truck maintenance. Foundation grants with low IDC, supplement but don’t support full #biomedical research costs
Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.

But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
Direct Economic Contributions
NIH directly supports the economy through investments in research institutions and job formation.

Thinking of my family and neighbors in Ireland who are gathered together to see out Storm Eowyn. They still have heat, but they’ve run out of wine!
