Der Kampf gegen ungerechte und koloniale Schulden ist ein interreligiöser Kampf. Deshalb wollen wir in diesem Beitrag die Verbindungen zwischen dem Islam und dem Kampf gegen Schulden aufzeigen.

Dies wird im islamischen Recht als „riba konsumieren“ bezeichnet und ist eine der sieben großen Sünden [Koran 2:275]. Grob kann „riba“ mit „Zinsen für Darlehen“ übersetzt werden. Für dieses Verbot gibt es zwei Gründe: 1) Weil Allah es verbietet. 2) Weil die Menschen nicht von den Notleidenden, also den Kreditnehmenden, profitieren sollen. Das Verbot des „Riba-Konsums“ ist ein Instrument, um die Anhäufung von Reichtum und Macht auf der Gläubigerseite und die Anhäufung von immer mehr Schulden auf der Schuldnerseite zu verhindern, da keine neuen Kredite benötigt würden, nur um die Zinsen für die alten Kredite zu bezahlen. Die Umsetzung dieses Konzepts im internationalen Schuldensystem würde: 1) Den Abfluss von Reichtum des Globalen Südens in den Norden stoppen. 2) Die Anhäufung untragbarer Schulden (wie z.B. derzeit in Ägypten und Tunesien, wo mehr als 30% der Staatseinnahmen für den Schuldendienst aufgewendet werden) und ihre negativen Folgen für Menschen, Natur, Gesellschaften und Volkswirtschaften verhindern.” Der Hintergrund ist ein blau-türkiser Farbverlauf. Oben in der Mitte steht “Schulden & Transparenz im Islam” darunter steht “Im Islam gibt es die Regel, dass es immer mindestens zwei unabhängige Personen geben soll, um einen Schuldvertrag zu überprüfen, und dass der Vertrag schriftlich festgehalten werden soll [Koran 2:282]. Oft weiß die Bevölkerung eines Landes nicht, wie viel Schulden sie bei wem und wofür hat. Ein Mittel gegen diese undurchsichtige Kreditaufnahme sind Schuldenprüfungen. Erfahrt mehr über dieses wirksame, aber noch wenig verbreitete Instrument, über das wir in Zukunft mehr reden werden.” Der Hintergrund ist ein blau-türkiser Farbverlauf. Es ist wichtig zu wissen, dass Wohltätigkeit im Islam eine sehr wichtige Rolle spielt, was sich in der Institutionalisierung der Wohltätigkeit in Form der „Zakah“ zeigt. Die Zakah ist eine der fünf Säulen des Islam und ist eine verpflichtende regelmäßige Zahlung, die alle Muslim*as leisten müssen und die an Bedürftige verteilt wird. Der Wohltätigkeitsgedanke ist nicht direkt übertragbar auf Schuldenstreichungen im internationalen Schuldensystem. Diese Schulden sind in den meisten Fällen durch ein ungerechtes und koloniales System entstanden, das darauf abzielte, die Länder verschuldet zu halten und damit kontrollierbar zu machen, so dass Schuldenstreichungen keine Wohltätigkeit, sondern notwendige Gerechtigkeit sind. Dennoch unterstützen wir das Prinzip des Schuldenstreichung für diejenigen, die ihre Schulden nicht zurückzahlen können, und das Prinzip der Umverteilung von Macht und Reichtum.”

The struggle against unjust and colonial debt is an inter-religious struggle. Therefore, in this post we want to highlight the connections between Islam and the debt struggle.

Our thoughts are especially with those who have to celebrate under difficult or even deadly circumstances like in #Gaza, #Sudan or #Congo.

Although the Jubilee (the periodic cancellation of all debts) is a Jewish and Christian tradition, the issue of debt and its cancellation is also relevant in Islam.” The background is a blue-turquoise color gradient. At the top in the center it says “Debt & Interest in Islam” underneath it says “Lending is allowed, but only under the strict condition that the lender does not profit from it, so charging interest on a loan is forbidden [Quran 3:130]. In Islamic law, this is called "consuming riba" and is one of the seven major sins [Quran 2:275]. Roughly, "riba" can be translated as interest on loans. This prohibition is justified for two reasons: 1) Because Allah forbids it. 2) Because people should not profit from people in need, i.e. people who take out a loan. The prohibition of "consuming riba" is an instrument that prevents the accumulation of wealth and power on the creditor side and the accumulation of more and more debt on the debtor side, since no new loans would be needed just to pay the interest on the old loans. Implementing this in the international debt system would: 1) Stop the draining of wealth from the Global South to the North. 2) Prevent the accumulation of unsustainable debt (as is currently the case in Egypt and Tunisia, for example, where over 30% of government revenue goes to debt service) and its negative consequences for people, nature, societies and economies.” The background is a blue-turquoise color gradient. Implementing this practice in the international debt system would prevent the intransparent borrowing that often occurs with dictators and corrupt regimes in various countries. Often, the people of a country don't even know how much debt they owe and to whom and for what. One way to combat this intransparent borrowing is through debt audits. Follow us to learn more about this powerful but not yet widely used tool, which we will be promoting more in the future.” The background is a blue-turquoise color gradient. At the top in the center it says “Debt Cancellation in Islam” underneath it says “In Islam, it is considered charity to cancel the debts of people who are unable to repay them, or at least to postpone the repayment of the debt [Quran 2:280]. For this it is important to know that charity plays a very important role in Islam, which can be seen in the institutionalization of charity in the form of "Zakat". Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and is an obligatory regular payment that all Muslims should make, which is redistributed to those in need. The idea of charity is not directly comparable to debt cancellation in the international debt system. Debt is mostly caused by an unjust and colonial system designed to keep countries in debt and thus controllable, so it is not charity but necessary justice to cancel it. Still, we also support the principle of cancelling the debts of those who can't repay, and the principle of redistributing power and wealth.”

Colonialism refers to the occupation, oppression and exploitation of one country by another through the use of military force. Racism serves as a means of legitimization for this process. Colonialism aims to secure access to raw materials, labor, and markets. England, France, and the Netherlands soon became competitors. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Great Britain assumed dominance. Within these research groups, the evolutionist assumption took hold — the idea of a linear development from the so-called “primitive natural peoples,” as allegedly found in Africa, to “civilized cultural peoples” in Europe. This notion culminated in the construction of biological “races” and the “science of race”. Racist narratives — such as the cultural circle theory, the concept of tribal societies, the idea of the Third World, and other stereotypes — have permeated European thought, influencing philosophers like Heidegger, Kant and Hegel. The racially fueled European wars of conquest culminated in genocides, concentration camps in Africa, and eventually in the industrialized extermination machinery of National Socialism in Europe.
