The last book on my list of what I read for my activist book clubs this year. It's an old title that would only be of interest to those who are curious about labor unions. I recommend other books I have previously reviewed over this one.

I am still reading this one. It's long, but so good. Both my daughters read it for AP US History. Makes me realize how daring their teachers were to assign this book as it is still considered radical, even today.

Ever wonder where the 3.5% statistic came from? Erica Chenoweth and her co-author arrived at it while studying the peaceful overthrow of authoritarianism by civilian populations around the world. It's a short, somewhat wonky read if you care to dig deeper.

I read this title earlier this year, and a number of fellow activists felt it wasn't hopeful enough. I disagree. HCR's substack is one I read daily. A historian, HCR shows readers that democracy has always been a struggle and is something worth fighting for.

If you're an educator, check this title out. The role we have played, and will continue to play, is critical to saving democracy and making it work for everyone. No wonder I see yet another headline about a billionaire wanting to undermine our public schools by giving parents vouchers.

This is the title we discuss next week. If you read only one book this year, this is it! For the tired activist, the would-be activist, and those who didn't vote in 2024, this book will convince you that our democracy, as flawed and imperfect as it is, is worth fighting for.

I posted reviews on Goodreads until I realized it is owned by Amazon. So I will post reviews here. This is one of several books I read in an activist book club in Ventura. It is excellent in that it gives background on autocratic leaders and how peaceful resistance led to their downfalls.

Don't give up! Keep going. If possible, make time today to phone bank for Aftyn Behn. We are close to flipping Tennessee 7 that was +22 Trump in 2024. We don't have to wait for next year's midterms. There's plenty to do now!

The People's House, or Trump's?

So much going on...And on the subject of "piggy" don't forget the "Trickle Down" theory of economics we've been fed for years. A myth. Boycotting works. Shop small, and if you can withhold your $ from Target, Amazon, and Home Depot after Cyber Monday, do it!

How can we be loud at the moment? Boycott Amazon, Target and Home Depot today through Monday. Shop small and local. If you have time, phone bank for Aftyn Behn. The election to fill Tennessee 7 is Tuesday, December 2. She has caught up to the Republican candidate.

Happy Thanksgiving!

For you activists who have a minute, phone bank if you can. Donate otherwise. Aftyn Beyn is tied with Epps at the moment, and that was from a right-leaning poll.

It's a long shot, but even Simon Rosenburg is getting behind this campaign. Calling is easy, and I like that you can leave a voicemail message that is from Aftyn Behn. Here is your action for this holiday season.

Target rolled back their diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.

Home Depot ICE continues to conduct violent raids on their property.
Amazon made donations to Trump and discounted government contracts (including for ICE), all in exchange for massive corporate tax breaks.

A gentle reminder: If you live nearby, show up! Wish I could. I am with all you citizen patriots in spirit. Don't give up the ship!

They end with the famous line delivered by Captain James Lawrence, who commanded USS Chesapeake in 1813 when it engaged in a naval battle with HMS Shannon during the War of 1812. In the battle, Lawrence was mortally wounded. As his men carried him below, he ordered:

“Don’t give up the ship.”

Thanks to Representative Garcia and Senator Wyden, the truth will come out, eventually.

Justice for the victims. The first step: Release the Epstein files. The next step: prosecute those who participated no matter who they are. The final step: Expose those who were complicit in that they knew what was going on and did/said nothing.

Happy that the Catholic Church is speaking up. Let's hope this continues. I post it here to encourage their actions.
