We did get Water 3 correct, at least.

We knew that Politoed and Stunfisk could absolutely breed together and we were pretty sure it was because of the Water 2 Egg Group which we thought was the terrestrial one.

We thought that it could be Water 3, but it definitely wasn't Water 1 which was clearly the fish-like one.

Like, they exist and we've read some of them, but there's so many fewer than romance stories with exclusively binary characters.

And, where they exist, many of them are also primarily about one of the romantic leads being nonbinary.

Also, empires are inherently linguistically diverse so it's not like everyone they ruled over spoke persian as their primary or first language!

It's pure ideology.

This was prompted by us seeing someone claim the Safavid empire has a greater claim to the persian language than any other state using it because they, "ruled Iran(as an Iranic dynasty) & shared our DNA! Pure Iranic!"

There are obvious antecedents, but too many people simply uncritically apply this view to everyone at all times in history.

To understand the past, we must be able to acknowledge this, to throw away the modernist bias toward conceptualizing people in terms of nationality.

If we can't do this, then we will always view the past from behind a veil obscuring our vision.

But this is simply not how history has ever functioned. Nationalism was invented within the past half millennia as a modernist simplification of culture.

Political and ethnic identities in the past were always fluid and not rigidly defined by things like ancestry or language.

In this view, germans had no right to claim themselves as romans and hellenic speakers were mistaken in calling their state and themselves roman.

In this view, what matters most is language, genetics, and heritage, not institutions, shared cultural practices, religion, etc.
