It tuns out that still works, if it is a cigarette. Be careful not to let your hair fall down on the burner, though, or that smell you smell will be you.

Out of interest, is this prompted by some specific thing you subject yourself to that I have mercifully missed? Or just general musing?

Would have been nice, if he could have finished Lee there. But I don’t think he could and trying might have turned his victory into a defeat.

I don’t know about rightfully. I am a bit of a Meade stan, to be sure. But he’s been in command for not even a week, he has a ton of wounded to deal with and the Army of the Potomac has just delivered an object lesson in why running headlong into prepared positions is dumb.
December 10, 2025 at 4:30 AM
No. I really am not and I am sorry that confused this in that way. But I have been in this discussion for a couple of decades, I have some edits in that article, and the DF-21 is a weapon system. It is a threat. But it isn’t a magic carrier delete button.
December 9, 2025 at 6:56 AM
“If it works as theorized” is doing a ton of work, there. And that article has always been way too credulous about the weapon system (and the USN responses; no one has done a close blockade of a peer since what? The napoleonic era?)

I promise that i am not unfamiliar with this topic and you are not telling me things I am unaware of; this is not a new discussion. Terminal guidance for a projectile gets harder as a matter of physics the faster it goes. It is one of many issues at play here; I am addressing one, but others exist.

This is mostly what I was referring to as well, I might have put it better by saying “hypersonic projectile “; the death of the carrier is a recurring theme. Before these it was cheap diesel electric submarines, IMS. It is a threat. But it isn’t magic.
December 9, 2025 at 6:37 AM
Ballistic missiles that are not hypersonic are not getting anywhere in 2-3 minute; covering 400 miles in a straight line in that time means you are moving at around 7800 kph, if the cold meds haven’t destroyed my ability to count.

Rods from god was a stupid idea in the 80s and it hasn’t gotten better. It is an idea that mostly came out of SF and space booster circles, grasping for a reason to Do Moar Space.
December 9, 2025 at 6:27 AM
Hypersonic missiles were the magic A2AD system circa 2010. Then folks built some and it turns out they are not actually magic but just another threat to deal with their own set of advantages and vulnerabilities.
December 9, 2025 at 6:24 AM
Sort of; we can be really precise against a non-moving target. But it turns out that a hypersonic projectile just isn’t that agile; inertia is not your friend in this situation.

My knees hurt all the time, even a slight disruption to my sleep fucks me for days and if i drink three beers in as many hours i am liable to get a two day hang over. There are compensations; I am much better at being a person than I was 20 years ago. But there are real downsides.

I think the Ciaphas Cain novels appeal to a weird mostly no 40k fan niche? Like, I love them, but they are pretty much the only 40k fiction i follow at all? And i think that might be common.

This is just preposterously fun (is fun the word?); I missed it at the start, but I'm finding myself looking forward to this every day.

This brings me an impossible amount of joy. I do not know how you got from A to B, but I'm choosing to believe it references some hitherto unknown British political figure.

Kinda love how the trump era has brought literally back from a meaningless emphasis word to “no, this insane shit actually happened as described and i need to make that clear.”

No great loss without some small gain, i guess.
November 20, 2025 at 6:23 AM
Sorry, this was weirdly and rudely abrupt.

Jinx
November 18, 2025 at 3:38 AM
Huh? Because one is being lazy and the other is being imposed; the first is something you are doing idly, the second is a role you feel compelled to perform.
November 18, 2025 at 3:37 AM
Perhaps. But i think there is a feedback loop at play. A lot of those personal connections were built on having access to the local spigot.

I grant it might not help at primary, time, though. (another local connection pipeline was racism, of course, and fuck that)

I continue to believe ending earmarks was an unmitigated disaster.

In San Francisco, I mean.

Around the turn of the century there were some Goth/Industrial nights in rich dot.com types lofts. I guess those were house parties with a cover?
Under construction - Awesome site in the making!

In general, the last quarter century has seen us reduce the friction between thought and action in a ton of areas life and it has just been uniformly bad.
