Ok well thanks for that definitive proof. There are several British slang phrases which originate from prison. Off the top of my head, "carpet" for the number 3, especially used at racecourses, comes from prisoners with a 3+ year sentence getting a cell with a carpeted floor.

It is. It originates from UK prisons where sex offenders were kept on a separate exercise rota from others to stop them being attacked. NONCE was a sign put up outside their cells which stood for "not on normal courtyard exercise" and the name stuck.
