I almost didn't answer because it was about ten minutes after you asked, and then I remembered this is BG3 character creation, I probably still had a good hour before you hit play.

Basically there's a list of characters that'll be your companions as you play through the game, but you can also choose to play as one of those companions, following their own story under your direct control (think choosing to be Garrus instead of Shephard in Mass Effect).

The Mario Party games might be worth a try. It's a lot of mini games, each with instructional videos of how to play them and what the controls are, that you can practice prior to playing them.
