Shared with permission: It's quarter-zip fleece season here in the north. You can't quite see the khaki pants but they match too. I told him that we could have coordinated on the shirt color.

Yeah, agreed. Nonetheless, I've seen problems that have students create normal lines from normal vectors (which is easier, but still). Somebody once wanted it, it got added in to Stewart, and... here we are.

Nope, don't teach it. I agree that it's probably either (1) super-duper lookahead to Calc 3 / vector analysis (which nobody will remember and can be taught quickly anyhow) or (2) algebra review about slopes.

You have my sympathy. Sincerely - guy with a common name who adopted Gmail early.

Autumn Meadowhawk, enjoying this hot and extremely dry autumn. The critters in my garden are still bringing me joy.

This beauty, munching on my winter carrots, will apparently become an Eastern Swallowtail.

I did not have the heart to move it. Fewer carrots for me, more for it.

I feel like "Students won't do assignments if I don't put points on them" is a whole separate post, maybe two, maybe an entirely new blog...

Huh. So... like "why do you care about grades so much?" (Genuinely trying to figure out what the implication is here.)
September 17, 2025 at 3:49 PM
As in "aren't you just giving everyone an A then?" Or do they mean something else?

Fighting this is kinda the purpose of the blog!

* There are no redos in the real world.

* I don't want a doctor who had to try a heart bypass 20 times before they got it right (or, I don't want to drive over a bridge from an engineer who had to try 20 times...)

* I had to suffer through it, so should they (or, traditional grades worked for me).
