The following takes place between March 1980 and June 1981. Part One: a seventh-floor hotel room in Knightsbridge. Tom Petty is sitting at a table drinking Coke and wishing it was Jack Daniel's. He's wearing an American Confederate jacket with one white star on the epaulette. He's got a Joni Mitchell bone structure, straw-blond hair and a smile like a Gainesville gator. He looks androgynous and he can be ruthless. Like he was on March 7 and 8 at the Hammersmith Odeon when he berated the audience after an hour of polite British reserve with the taunt: "Are you all on fucking Mandrax?" And then slays them with When The Time Comes. It's a riot now.

This is so good! Amazing how much of our language derives from seafaring. They’re all interesting, but this one struck me as super cool. I always thought “cut of your jib” came from the boxing ring.
'I like the cut of your jib': Jibs are triangular sails that are found at the front of a ship. The shape of jibs varied across countries and nations, and as a result, 18th-century sailors could identify a warship as a friend or foe by the shape of their jib. A proposed amendment becomes part of the Constitution as soon as it is ratified by three-fourths of the States (38 of 50 States). When the OFR verifies that it has received the required number of authenticated ratification documents, it drafts a formal proclamation for the Archivist to certify that the amendment is valid and has become part of the Constitution.
