In the mid-80s my college debate team *drove* from LA to Salt Lake City for a tournament and while airfare was cited I half think it was for our coach to have a couple of hours in Vegas each way. Circus Circus buffet and free underage drinks seemed a bit cool as an 18yo

Interesting re TJ, my experience is usually a much younger target audience.

I recall panic shopping on the Day the Pandemic Became Real, Whole Foods was mellow 90s alternative, TJ was 80s pop, and the discount liquor barn was Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

It did, though not hugely. If that's enough to count it would argue against the hypothesis I think as the clinton presidency was sure not an era of the military becoming comfortable with more subordination
