I'm having fun!
Obviously there's 0% chance to win anything, but now at least I know how the process of entering this type of event works.
I even managed to get the game accepted for the "Detective Fest 2026" event 🕵️
(And yes, Encounter "Stands Out" with its big pixels)

I need to double check, but basically that's a run down of the raw material cost for the physical edition of "Encounter", not counting the tools, time spent, and the bazillion of test prints and experimentation. 🙃

If only it was actually working.
I'm kind of cursed with red and black phones, they all have issues when I receive them!
I wish I could find a service manual, but doubtful I can find one.

Thank to my players I now have a "User Score" on Metacritic.
I unfortunately can't have a Metascore because no "serious" publication has reviewed the game.
Somebody suggested that I should use my credentials, like "Ex developer from Adeline Software, Eden Game and Funcom" ⤵️

This is my release candidate for the Encounter manual, I did my best in term of proof reading, but I'm not a native English speaker so most probably it contains weird sounding sentences, so if anyone feels like doing a quick check, would be awesome!🙏

My experience in putting Encounter in reverse-sale so it's twice as expensive as it was before did not result in any sales (not surprised), but what's weird is that the day I did that I got a couple sales on Steam, not sure if that's related though, just interesting 😅

Thanks to all the suggestions. I did not have the right stuff to use paint, so I used a combination of other things, including the tea/coffee, skuff marks, sanding, putting stickers (after all Ford Prefect is a traveler, so he personalized his own guide)
Good enough for tomorrow!

What would be the easiest way to "age" a 3d printed object, in this case to make it look like it's been through quite a few adventures, fell down, got scratched, drenched in Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. etc...
(It's standard PLA)

I wonder how many of the players actually played the minigame inside Encounter, and if they did, which score did they manage to reach in Game A and Game B modes?🤔

The nice thing with my 28" 3:2 aspect ratio screen is that I can edit the user manual in dual-page mode comfortably. 🎉
Now if only I was good at the whole "write a manual" thing, at least I can't blame the equipment! 😅

It's the #Halloween Sale 2025 on defenceforce.itch.io/encounter but since Encounter is not eligible for the Steam "spooky" sales and does not allow selling a game for cheaper on another platform, I decided to test Itch's reverse rebate feature: The game is now at twice the price! 😱

When you failed to plan (in this case having the inside printed at the same time as the outside), you can still use plan B (which in this case is printing stickers and apply them because the laser printer is not able to print on the thick glossy paper).
Not perfect, good enough!

I also received what I ordered for the outer packaging, it's not as good as I hoped, but it will have to do.
I could have gone full custom box, but the prices were insane, so that's what I'm going with.

So yesterday I did a printing test for the manual cover in two different print shops. One has slightly more accurate colors, the other one has nicer feeling (glossiness and thickness) paper.
I think I'm going for the better paper one.⤵️

Technically you can also use something like a HDMI to SCART converter to to run stuff of your PC on an actual CRT!

That was not the case, but I can see why you think that.
But I was indeed looking at other games manuals I had for inspiration :)

Testing a possible design for the game manual cover.

And the Oric V23 modem is now modified as well, with a 3 prongs removable power cable, on/off switch, and RJ11 analog phone connector.
That should make testing easier and less messy🎉

And one modem done, next on the list is the Oric V23 modem.🎉
The ultimate goal is to get two Oric, each with a modem, talking to each other through an actual phone line.😅

Funny, it's #SteamNextFest right now, and despite my game not being on it (because I missed it), someone bought it 😅

The modem is alive again 😅
I still need to connect the RJ11 and do the flat cable connector crimping, but at least now I have a proper removable power cable and a on/off switch, which goes a long way on the usability side!

Work in progress: removing all the fixed attached cables of the Digitelec DTL 2000 modem and replace them by proper connectors, and while I'm at it have a on/off switch.

And if you are looking for some recent Oric software to have an idea of what the "state of the art" is, there's a showcase on itch from various authors on defenceforce.itch.io including some tech demos, full games, etc...
