I wonder how long it can last when they ask the artists to do their own marketing now and streaming takes care of the distribution.

Which, of course, is why they've built monopolies around concert venues.

Yes, it's a straight line through bad contract innovations in the 60's, through to iTunes, Spotify, and now. Anything that reduces their costs and increases their revenue (how much doesn't really matter) will be embraced. Artists are an afterthought.

When only 10% of the world was online (and only 1% actively used it) it felt like a small, vibrant club.

I find myself trying to discern when things are *actually worse*, it's just different and I'm older now, or it's better because its more accessible to most people.

Pressure for growth means the big platforms have to find new sources of revenue, which aren't the ones people originally came to them for.

The audience early users were part of used to be a giant share of the web. It is now a drop in the bucket.
