Also, I assume an unspent fraction of my HSA will become part of my retirement savings, which is certainly not true this year. So medical expenses are literally postponing my (distant) retirement.

Worth emphasizing the importance of unions in forcing business owners to increase pay as productivity increased. Those two began diverging as anti-union laws, regulations & sentiment grew.

Hope you have an enlightened VP who explicitly pulls in the technical domain expert(a) to research, short-list options & recommend a solution that's the best technical fit. Not common at your typical enterprise, but as execs get more tech-savvy, it's slowly shifting.
