Stürzt die neue US-Aussenpolitik die Demokratie weltweit in die Krise? An Osteuropa könnte die Eiszeit der Demokratie vorbeiziehen.

Conference travel, continued. Getting into Napoli for SISP.

As many of you were wondering whether the student protests in Serbia are still active, and amidst expectations that they would die over the summer.

Today is the first day of school. The high school students organised big rallies, and boycotted the start of the school year.

It looks academic freedoms are all over the conference, but some of them a bit badly placed...

Serbia: Former state minister of police from the regime party reportedly circulated revenge porn against our student at the Uni Belgrade, Pol Sci.
.
The pictures show our student as an underage girl.

The former minister is documented to have close links to the mafia. She has never been sentenced.

Do you take the apple- or the pear-shaped krumpli for paprikas?

Erd- / Kart- / Härd- / Grund- / Boda -> ground

- apfel / -öpfel / -offel -> apple
- birne / -bire / -pere -> pear

Hm... I find the summary on this picture more plausible. I only saw few signs since January that the police (other than the secret services, "elite" units and their press office) is involved in any action against the students. Check carefully the happenings around the 22-hour-liberation of RTS.

#Serbia: largest protest in history, est. 5% the pop,

despite the authorities having closed down all rail traffic for 2 days & coerced bus companies to cancel all regular&chartered services.

Student organisers kept peace & order, despite the regime trying to instigate violence.

I was lucky enough that Valentina Petrović @sociology-uzh.bsky.social invited me to a book talk on "Structural origins of post-Yugoslav regimes".

Here I wrote down for @democratization.bsky.social @felixschulte.bsky.social why you should read the book:

The connection is so immanent, I couldn't imagine how one could go without the other. @mguinjoan.bsky.social

Can you envisage a foto competition, deadline after spring/summer, so that we can produce fresh evidence?

Probably we should add Albania (for some elections) and Finland to the list, and it would still be incomplete, I remember having seen stuff in LA...
Also, there might be issues and ambiguities with the definition of joint lists vs. apparentments.
Keep us updated about your findings.

Andreas Juon and I were curious about the diffusion of constitutional rules... and so we studied the role of mediators in designing power-sharing constitutions after conflicts.

Everyone knows about retrospective (economic) voting.
We asked who wins the votes that the incumbent loses. New parties? Established oppositions?

Electoral systems are a key variable in all kinds of research on politics & policies. However, scholars struggle to find a universal measure to operationalise them.
Just accepted in Electoral Studies, our 'effective district magnitude', with Miriam Hänni & Bernard Grofman.
