Taking a seat. 😄

We absolutely need more of it these days too. ❤️

Agreed!

What we choose to measure has so much impact on how we respond.

If people's experiences (which are qualitative data!) are saying one thing but the "hard data" says something else, it means your data is missing something.

Similarly: Under Biden when homeless shelters were seeing record need but economists insisted the numbers were fine.

CDG is the worst, LOL.

I've learned 5 hours is just enough time to leave, get food somewhere decent off the RER B, and make it back to fly out internationally.

I'm that friend. 😂 (I travel a lot but hate airports, so I spend as little time in them as possible.)

Singapore has bars, but locals don't go out like they do in the US. I believe booze is more heavily taxed.

I love a good cocktail & usually get one when I go out here, but I'm not sure I've ever had one in SG? And I'm from there!

Gatherings just don't include alcohol to the degree they do here.

Asia doesn't have the drinking culture of the US, Australia, or most of Europe on the whole though. (TBH that's fine with me.)

But food they absolutely have covered.

The food in Singapore Changi is great! My relatives usually have big meals with us there before we fly out.

Beijing handles food well too. I had quite good roast duck, etc.

And I've had random ramen at Tokyo Narita that's as good as the best you can get in the US. Plus excellent cheesecake.

His meta points are good - the poverty level is set too low & the hole in our safety nets is a real problem - but having personally made a wide range of incomes, I think his numbers are wildly off.

He ends up concluding the poverty line should be set at around the Top 20% of US median income.

It is wild to me how deeply people appreciate news synthesis + lists of resources (I'm chronically online with Bsky organizer types so these lists seem more standard in my world - in the best way!) + how rarely public officials pull them together.

They're not hard to compile! And people love them!

... I needed this reminder.

I was holding it reasonably together (exhausted, but you know...) and then Chicago was invaded.

They're not entirely gone but wow am I glad for a breather & being able to step down somewhat from high alert.

I am tired. I am also tired of being constantly livid at these failures of supposed public servants.

So many Americans from random neighbors to federal workers are organizing & stepping up in different ways but our leadership can't see past their donors, grifts, & personal agendas.
