That’s a great example, really unique!

Are there any particular aspects of it that you enjoy? Or that just works really well?

Which one is your favorite?

3: Nyxara, The Shattered Queen – Serrated fangs adorn the bat-like face and her rubbery hide is covered in protruding bone spikes. Wings of black smoke rise from her back and serrated talons are ready to rend flesh. Nyxara absorbs life from damaged foes but she is unable to cross running water.

2: Valkriss, The Soulrender – Her draconic face is crowned with jagged horns and the swollen mass of a body is filled with pulsating, veined tumors. A spined tail ending in a barbed stinger sway menacingly. Valkriss can control minds but shy away from mirrors which reflect her corruption.

1: Tzarkun, The Voidbound Reaper – His eyeless visage is covered in writhing tendrils and his scaled rubbery hide constantly immolated. Arms with chitinous pincers hang by his side and skeletal wings adorned with bone spurs sway on his back. Tzarkun’s can spew fire, but his flesh burns in sunlight.

That’s great advice, very clear. I know a lot of GMs struggle with consistency when it comes to NPCs that only show up every now and then

It’s hard to not be biased, but I did design Adventurous™ specifically for beginner players and GMs. Every mechanic, rule and idea is tailored for novice players.

With that said, I’d rec. Shadowdark if I can’t pitch my own game. Char gen is quick and random and the rules are easy to grasp and apply

That’s 5 tips, but what are your best advice for new and experienced GMs? Drop it below and let’s build a treasure trove of DM wisdom together!

5/5: Always have a list of random names prepared. When players ask for a character’s name, having a thematic list on hand keeps the game immersive and prevents awkward pauses.

This is the surest way to avoid all those “Bobs, Gimlis and Frodos” you blurt out when choking.

4/5: It’s okay to pause and think while DMing. Just say, ‘Give me a moment.’ Your players won’t mind. They’ll appreciate the care you’re putting into their game.

This is a tip I realized way too late in my own GM career.

3/5: Don’t prep solutions, prep problems. Set the stage, present the challenge, and let your players figure it out. Their creative solutions will be more satisfying than anything pre-planned.

2/5: Don’t reinvent the wheel — steal, borrow, and adapt. Books, movies, TTRPG modules, use all you’ve got if it sparks inspiration. Your players won’t care where an idea came from, only how you bring it to life.

1/5: Don’t over-prepare. Start small, a village, a few locations, one dungeon is usually enough. Players will derail your plans anyway, and that’s part of the fun. Build as you go to not waste valuable prep time.
