It varies from class to class. I’m finding that students who major in text-based programs and athletes are reading and doing the work. Our coaches make good educational partners, insisting that the students do their work well and on time.

So I did the little thing that I could and gave up half a year’s salary to start an endowment. Worth it. Now one or two students a year get half their tuition paid through this.

But of course there’s not a lot of funding for that sort of thing. Lots of kids around here are told that they should go to med school or banking. Which is fine if you’re into that. But I know there’s a need for lawyers, writers, teachers, and artists — who can graduate without debt.

A few of us created that endowment ten years ago because we wanted to create opportunities for indigenous students who will go on to law school, journalism, history, philosophy, education, etc. There are important stories to be told, both old and new.
