Retired lawyer with many interests (roses, jazz, opera, history, poetry) and little time to pursue them. Life-long Democrat, hoping all I know about the USA, our Constitution, and our Democratic Republic will not turn out to be wrong. No DMs please.
Dammit, Mr. President. You’ve drooled all over the Resolute Desk. Do you know what that does to the finish?

Give the guy a break. 100,000 years in Purgatory should suffice. As for Mamdani, two terms as mayor, one as governor, and then the US Senate sound fair.
November 5, 2025 at 11:40 PM
Agree to both, but don’t you find it disturbing that so many establishment Democrats failed to condemn it or in some cases joined in?

I don’t blame him. Cuomo all but called him a terrorist, insulted his culture and religion, and tried to link him to 911. I doubt I would have spoken with more restraint.

I agree. We have reached the stage wealthy cannot stop acquiring power or accept incremental reforms; nor do moral strictures, sacred or civic, have any meaning for them, except as a weapon to beat down the less powerful. Radical change is necessary, but I doubt we have the stomach for it.

He’s not throwing catsup-laden fries, he’s throwing whole bottles of the stuff. Heads up, Miller. Incoming!

DS is compatible with capitalism, as we have seen in the Scandinavian countries. They have a degree of socialism, but also successful private companies and many wealthy individuals. Soviet communism and Maoism are not (though modern China is more mixed than most imagine), but neither is fascism.

Democratic socialism beats fascism every time. You may or may not learn to like it, but I guarantee they won’t put you in concentration camps.

It’s fucking hilarious, not to mention true.

The “autopen” controversy is bullshit. The only reason it exists at all is that Republicans are attempting to bootstrap it into a claim that Biden didn’t authorize or know about the pardons. Yet now Trump has admitted he knew nothing about a pardon. That, if you believe Republicans, is the ballgame.

I have an Italian name some think is Spanish. A few friends think I could pass for Mexican. (I don’t see it.) I now carry my passport when traveling out of town, since apparently RealID compliant driver’s licenses aren’t enough. Hard to believe this is the country of my birth.

Great Caesar’s Ghost, he seems like a moderate and a statesman now.

Let me play you the video and here for your convenience is a transcript. Now that you’ve seen them, I have a question or two.

Wear steel-toed boots.

Let me help. They didn’t deserve it, even if they were drug traffickers. We don’t summarily kill people, in or outside the US, because we suspect they might be trafficking drugs.

“And there’s not a damn thing you can do about it.”

Nixon really missed a bet.
October 28, 2025 at 10:22 PM
Nixon was forced from office, despite being a popular president who had won reelection in a stunning landslide. He hadn’t done a tenth of this, but the country rose against him and his own party turned him out. That seems like a different country entirely.

Institutes Hunger Games instead.

I believe Biden eventually came to realize the threat, but being a politician, he handled it as a politician would - with speeches, by jawboning members of Congress, by making judicial appointments, etc. He was an institutionalist, and he wasn’t going to color outside the lines. Garland was worse.

The truth bears repeating.

ICE isn’t military. They are supposed to be federal immigration enforcement, but they are well on their way to becoming an ill-trained, unaccountable, poorly-led domestic paramilitary. Thugs, in other words.

No park, wilderness area, or monument is safe unless Congress or the Court exercises their constitutional authority to stop him. If he wishes to demolish the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, or the Statue of Liberty, he may. The laws alone mean nothing without an enforcement mechanism.
