#30: Atelier Sophie 2.

SO GOOD!!! I have so many thoughts about the Mysterious series and mentorship as a core theme, especially women mentoring and inspiring women. And the way this builds on Sophie's character so beautifully... I love her so much...!

#29: Yakuza 4 Remastered.

I love these games, I try to play one a year, but what the FUCK happened with the writing in this one??? The finale seemed cool for a bit until it tripped all over itself five different ways. An unreal number of fumbles.

#28: Kirby's Dream Land 2.

Another Air Riders Direct, another Kirby game playthrough for me I guess. The animal friends are fun, but oof the level design. You can really tell Sakurai wasn't on this one.

#27: To the Moon.

I didn't vibe with the humour, but the story is both clever and bittersweet. Plus I have a soft spot for pixel-based narrative staging. Something about the way characters move around is so charming.

#26: Fire Emblem Three Houses.

I can FINALLY call this done after three playthroughs across at least as many years. BE -> BL -> GD, and I'm quite happy with that order. Felt like setting up the stakes -> seeing the conflict from the other side -> firm resolution.

They place you in chains,
linked metal rings
each so narrow as to block
even my smallest finger
from worming through to touch your flesh.
I place my palms on your chest,
feel plates engraved with words of praise
for another man,
run my hands down your spine
and over cold reminders
of devotion to cause.

You must be blocked from blades and arrows
but why from me?
To lift the hem and move underneath
is to feel the weight of iron on my wrists.

But at least your body is still yours,
not wiped away with cuirass facade;
your shape still seen,
not hidden behind plackart lustre.
Though iron rings bear down on them,
at least there is still room
for my hands
to rest upon your heart.

Very funny how someone on Paul Schrader's team clearly made a Wikipedia account just to edit in an unsourced claim about the resolution of his sexual harassment case. 😏

There are two movies I've watched this year that my mind keeps returning to.

Patlabor 2, about the way our peaceful society is propped up by violence abroad.

Peep "TV" Show, about the inherent unreality of watching mass tragedy occur on our screens.

#25: Picross S3.

Probably actually #22 or so, missed posting about it somehow. Anyway, it's Picross. The colour puzzles were neat!

#24: Donkey Kong Bananza.

Weirder and wonkier than Odyssey in good and bad ways. I liked digging. (The landfill layer was my favourite!)

I started EOIII a while back but didn't get past the first stratum. Something just wasn't clicking. I should keep trying, or change my party or something, but no. The call of EOV is stronger.

I got a hankering for some Kirby after today's Direct. Game was good even before they introduced copy abilities, although extra mode is pretty brutal!

I put a lot of thought and care into HIS OWN BEING, my most deeply personal project since TIME PASSED back in 2018, only for its views to be massacred by the adult games delisting... It wasn't gonna be a commercial hit anyway, but man. Hard not to wonder.

An old @joelesko.bsky.social Flash game. I could play a bunch more levels of this!

The only review on the Amazon page for that issue of Vitality Magazine is from my mom 😅
