I'm Co-Chair of Halifax Cycling Coalition, working hard to make cycling in Halifax safer, more convenient and more joyful. In this role, I focus first and foremost on the 60% of the population who would cycle more if it felt safe.
For sure. The provincial laws are the root of the problem.

To be clear, I am just surmising. But they already have a sign where the COLT crosses the 102/Joe Howe slip lane. That one actually says that cyclists must dismount at all intersections which is just plain wrong.

I call it design for entrapment. Design knowing people will ride it, CYA with a sign, and knowing that if you get hit the police will charge you.

I suspect that the sign is indeed for the cross-ride since they are not legal (yet) in NS. In our presentation for the new TSA regulations we will make a strong case that they need to be legalized.

Not all the line painting is done but there have been no delays the last few times

I would say it has been well received in that it is leading to a review of the city’s policy.

Same here. We (HCC) developed a policy paper on them which led to a councillor asking for a staff report on setting a higher standard (I.e. meeting NACTO recommendations). So, we can hope.

Hopefully we’ll see more of these on local street bikeways so that they actually meet criteria in terms of traffic volume and speed.

For comparison purposes, roughly 400,000 bikes counted by #bikehfxstats in a similar period. Not exactly apples to apples in that a bike counted is not equivalent to a trip. And may trips are missed by counters.

That’s amazing. Needless to say I am not of Borealis caliber. It is a great organization!
