Reading this led me to read up on German colonialism in Tanzania. Blimey, particularly brutal I was thinking, until I realised that’s what I always think when I read about any European colonialism.

With apologies to Gerth & Mills (1954), I rail against the changing meaning of ‘performative’ as beautifully defined and used by Butler (1990).

Anyway, Gerry & Wright Mills (1954, pp. 278-279). Language, grammar conventions, vocabulary. Controlled, policed by, made static and used by the upper classes to exclude & protect their position, their privilege.

I saw this from Yvette Cooper and her dept on social media, ‘we have condemned the killing of Iranian protestors and urged the Iranian authorities to respect the fundamental rights of their people to take part in peaceful protests, without fear of violence or reprisals.´ I wonder if it's genuine

And finally a classic that was apparently CLR James's favourite novel. I keep trying and I keep failing to finish it, so not sure I'd recommend.
'Vanity Fair', still not feeling it like I do Jane Austin.

Also I am reading Easy Rawlins 13 - 'Rose Gold', by Walter Mosley.
Nice easy crime with an interesting backdrop, still going strong. I recommend trying one, probably the first one first.
I have no idea why these are not a medium-high budget film series.

On a lighter note. I am reading three books. Looking for a recommendation?
bell hooks, 'the will to change, men, masculinity and love.' (re-reading, well, audiobook, honest).
Buy this, read this or listen to this. bell hooks renders the complex accessible.

Twenty-seven years and out.
I feel as if I am institutionalised to Middlesex University, I have been so happy in my job for so long that leaving will be quite a challenge.

Interesting article but he implies that only a social psychologist (his subject?) can have an credible view on racism: "If they (politicians) don’t have degrees or past careers in social psychology...then they are no more experts in the topic than you are..."

Are we a racist society? The majority of us say no – but science begs to differ
Although greater awareness of prejudice would suggest we are less bigoted than ever, empirical evidence indicates not

I am slowly moving over here, finding who I follow one by one. It's easier to swap utilities.
