When this VC-funded platform ends up like X, we don't get to be surprised. Move to Mastodon now – everything else is unsustainable: https://joinmastodon.org/servers

Note though that dual boot can be rather difficult to set up and maintain. However, it's a piece of cake if you install each OS on its own physical drive.

– NVidia-Grafikkarte
– Drucker
– spezielle Software oder Spiele
– spezielle Hardware (z.B. professionelle Audioproduktion)
Download Linux Mint 22.3 - Linux Mint
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.

Linux Mint, Cinnamon Edition: www.linuxmint.com/download.php

That's absolutely right :)

Regarding for dual booting, it's highly recommendable to buy a second SSD for that. Costs ~15€ for a used one and is much easier to set up and maintain than doing it from the same drive. :)

If you've got 15€ to spare, you can by a used second SSD and install Linux there. Much, much easier than dual-booting from the same drive :)

Everyone here should be aware that blocking on BlueSky IS NOT PRIVATE.

Everyone and your government can get a list of people who block ICE, including you: clearsky.app/icegov/block...

Muting by contrast is private.

You can test many Linux distributions in the browser: distrosea.com

Best for beginners: linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php

To begin, you can test it via a live USB stick or a virtual machine (VM), then install it on a second SSD and keep Windows. Guide for all options: itsfoss.com/install-linux-mint

Siehe di.day/mastodon/ und dann joinmastodon.org/servers

The ecological argument to buy used is especially important, at least if you can find a device that fits your requirements well. But it's your choice, of course. :)

Personally I'd look at it in terms of who benefits. Then a used computer bought in Europe is actually more European, and less American, than any new one: With a new computer, at least half of the money or so goes to US companies for components and patent licenses. With a used one, zero money.

Ah perfect! :)

The laptop looks decent, but I don't know that much about hardware. Personally I usually recommend buying used ThinkPads and a fresh replacement battery if needed. Keep in mind that Linux will dramatically lower your hardware needs compared to what you're used to from Windows.

I do suggest you start with Linux Mint, Cinnamon edition. It's indeed extremely good for beginners. First make a live USB stick (e.g. with the tool Rufus) – then you can test run it on your computer without installing.

Perfect, then a follow up on your printer: Despite WiFi & Android support, the driver question is usually the same I think. If it's Brother, you should be fine. Same goes for HP, but fuck HP. With Canon, Epson etc., it may depend.

Linux Mint, among other virtues, is very good with printer drivers.
January 17, 2026 at 9:12 PM
If you have any of

– a NVidia graphics card
– a printer
– specific software or games that you definitely need/want to keep using
– specialist hardware (e.g., for audio production)

it's good to check/ask around if Linux support for your specific models is good. As distribution, start w/ Linux Mint

End of 10
Extended support for Windows 10 ends in 2026. Don’t buy a new PC — revive yours with Linux. It's fast, secure, and help is available to get you started.

Steam itself already runs wonderfully on existing Linux distributions. SteamOS will probably bring some improvements in this regard or another, but Linux Mint or Bazzite already fulfil almost all needs. (Some exceptions: Kernel anticheat and perhaps some special hardware.)
