Does anyone know what this huge chimney close to Birkenhead Hamilton Square station was for? All I can imagine is that it was for the “giant grasshopper” pump???

These two photos were captioned as soldiers during the 1911 Transport Strike but the presence of the band and the fact that they are emerging from behind the Town Hall suggests to me that they are Liverpool soldiers leaving the city to fight in WWI.
