Did some archive work at @vickersmg.bsky.social today. Quite emotional, lots of log books from aircrews who were KIA and this Christmas card wish Xmas to be bomb-free. Then again, there is this unintentionally funny wedding photo.

This scene from Andor is meme gold for misconceptions.

Now look at this in comparison. This is an EM2, a trials rifle from the early 1950s in Britain. Learning the lessons of how weapons could be used from the SWW whilst making use of machining and nice wood as that's what the British Arms industry did best, the cheek rest is a wood venier! /8

So called 'wonder' Weapons. This leads us to the Gustloff. Just look at that piece of shit. Innovative? Yes. Terrible to handle and use? Absolutely. This is a disposable gun made for a dictatorship in its final days with few resources, and it shows. /7

As the war went on, Germany became more desperate, fighting in Russia was not what was expected. The MP44 (later renamed STG - Assualt rifle) was the Nazi state's answer. This is truly innovative in design, a rifle that is select fire and designed to be used at the normal combat distance of <300m /5

I wasn't working on a Sten yesterday, but the Soviet equivalent, the PPS43, look how its different to the MP28, same job, but look at all that stamping, not surprising for a gun designed during the Siege of Leningrad, complete simplicity and incredibly cheap, this wasn't possible in 1928 /4

They were made. For example this is a MP28/II. A German SMG that is an improved MP18, look at all that wood and fantastic machining, this would have been a small fortune to make, but it reflects the production capabilities of Germany at the time. Being post-Versailles it's aimed for the police /2

One of my jobs at the collection (alongside educating) is cleaning. The British Army in the early 20thC poured boiling water through barrels to wash away corrosive salts and to loosen any rust. At the @vickersmg.bsky.social still do this and it works a treat.

Yesterday was my first time being really hands-on with a Maxim @vickersmg.bsky.social and it was a real eye opener. Checking and cleaning the Russian 1910 really showed how much a leap forward the Vickers was. Much easier to disassemble and didn't require a mallet like this did.

One of the perks of working at the @vickersmg.bsky.social Trying out a dual Vickers AA mount. It's very easy to move around in, once you've navigated your way into the seat.

Cracking trip with @vickersmg.bsky.social. 2 schools, 26 students, a firing demo and a chance to shoot. The best trip that I've ever ran.
We will be doing this again if anyone is interested.

Navigating the #VickersMG
Hi folks, We know that there is so much on our Patreon channel that we have created a site map to help people understand what is there and to find some of the key elements. I've used loads of this in lessons. The photo collection is worth the £3 a month

Book #4, physical one this time. Interesting read, and the detail on the A-H empire and the earlier period in the book is excellent. It's a bit dated now (though only published in 2000). Wawro's reliance on JFC Fuller is a little concerning.

Inspired (copying) @mrsball.bsky.social's tracking and sharing books - but with a MilHis twist. 1st read of the year is this, bought for me by 6th formers. Interesting reading and a great way of framing conflict, the storied of mules in the ACW vanishing in mud were horrible, but some poor sources

Playing 'how well do you know me' last night. Tye universal response was firearms, I protested, if anything not enough. That being said, I paid £100 to replace this part

This was a fun attempt to try and explain comparative judgements with Y10 today.
Thanks to @hughrichards.bsky.social or @edurbin.bsky.social, I saw one of you mention this, can't remember which!

One of the most impressively nerdy facts that I've seen included in an A Level answer - the obturator ring in a Chassepot, bravo.

Preparing for some filming tomorrow for content for schools for the Vickers MG collection - some really cool videos are planned that can be embedded into lessons.

If anyone has requests please do let me know.
