Sometimes you can be a friend by telling said friend that they are making a big mistake. (Or a series of big mistakes.)

You just get the sense that there are people in Number 10 who are so keen to show us how clever and politically astute they are that they actually end up showing the opposite.

McSweeney is a crutch. I think it speaks to Starmer’s central vulnerability and point of self-doubt - that he can’t “do politics” - and McSweeney was the guy who was there at the lowest ebb to turn his fortunes around.
