This has to be my star moth of the night - a stunning Amphipyra cinnamomea (no doubt as to why it is called cinnamon!) and a new moth for me - I don't often see new macro-moths now in Andalucia! - moth-trapping at Puente Palo, Sierra Nevada, Granada Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 21st of October 2025. The beautiful scarce migrant - Mediterranean Brocade - Spodoptera littoralis - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 17th of October 2025. And the very rare and tiny Garella nilotica. - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 19th of October 2025. (Also known as the Black-olive Caterpillar moth, but I don't know anyone who uses that name!?) This was one of two that I trapped this autumn and with only 9 previous records for me - so, not even annual! Pseudozarba bipartita appears to be a migrant in small numbers in this area - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 14th of October 2025. Here is my last and 14th! - Ancylosis harmoniella of this autumn arrival - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 15th of October 2025. On an afternoon walk around CIMA, this is the top of the CIMA sheltered valley and here looking north east to Bosque de Niebla. Zebeeba falsalis is a beautiful moth when fresh like this one! - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 13th of October 2025. Possibly the rarest moth for me on this night for migrants was this Cornifrons ulceratalis - an excellent and scarce find. Over 13 years of trapping in this area I recorded a total of 11 moths from this species until this spring. (However this spring was exceptional for this moth with 128 recorded!) Another great looking Ancylosis harmoniella - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 13th of October 2025. One of 9 trapped on the night!!

A well known moth-migrant was this species - Crimson Speckled - Utetheisa pulchella, with a great total of 43 in the traps! - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 13th of October 2025. And this was probably star moth of the night - with 9 seen in varying colour forms! Ancylosis harmoniela - to put this into context - in 13 years of detailed surveying at this site, I have only before trapped 4 of them! Ancylosis is an exciting genus with some great species in there! Ophiusa tirhaca - is a moth that I haven't worked out - is it a migrant or a scarce resident, or both? - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 13th of October 2025.

What a great looking Crambidae moth to see? - Hydriris ornatalis - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 12th of October 2025. Until last week, I knew this beautiful moth as Parascotia nisseni - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 12th of October 2025. But thanks to research by José Luis Yela and friends and as reported in the Fauna Ibérica: Noctuoidea facebook group I now know that this is almost certainly Parascotia cirippa. Parascotia nisseni has been found to be a complex of 4 species and Parascotia cirippa is the one known from Iberia. And the dusk was very pink due to the Calima. This is another star moth from the night! - Woods's Dart - Agrotis graslinii and I trapped 5 of them! - moth-trapping at Punta Paloma, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 8th of October 2025. (It is only known in Europe from the coasts of France, Spain and Portugal and the Portugal/Spain subspecies is arenosa.) And a beautiful fresh Catarrhoe basochesiata - moth-trapping at Punta Paloma, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 8th of October 2025. This is the view looking inland from one of the higher dunes. You can see that as you get further inland, the habitat changes to Pine Forest. What a stunning place to moth trap - this is in the evening light when setting up traps, with the view to Tarifa in the background! - moth-trapping at Punta Paloma, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 8th of October 2025. And these were two of my star moths - the excellent Streblote panda - moth-trapping at Punta Paloma, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 8th of October 2025. And nowhere near as exciting to look at but much rarer is this moth! - Oporopsamma dunaria. I trapped 4 on the night and these were the only ones I saw all autumn! I love to see this moth species - Phycita diaphana with its 'hunched shoulders' like a broken off twig! - moth-trapping at Huerta Grande, Pelayo, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 5th of October 2025 And I had to show you this leaf with 3 leaf mines in it. I believe the leaf is a grape vine and that the leaf miner is Aspilanta oinophylla. With these holes in the leaves next to the mines it has to be a Heliozelidae, but this also means that the caterpillar has left the leaf. If my identification is correct then this will be a new species for Iberia! But I can't claim that with no caterpillar or adult moth to show anyone! So, I will need to revisit the site at a different time of year to try to locate larvae or/and adults! - moth-trapping at Huerta Grande, Pelayo, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 5th of October 2025. (But please correct me if you know I have got this wrong?) Gregson's Dart - Agrotis spinifera is definitely one of my favourite noctuids from Spain, though not very rare. - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 4th of October 2025. And it was my night for a walk along the coast to Tarifa, with a nearly full moon lighting my way along the coast path!
