I feel that there should be some sort of different category for books like this ( and the Paladin series)

There are aspects that could be "wound up" into real horror, but the treatment is very down to earth

(Wicked is a bad musical with two great songs, both of which are conveniently in the first half. There is no reason to return after the interval.)
