The kids wanted ramen tonight so we're trying Buldak (13yo picked it out and I decided to keep my mouth shut). They're discovering that "spicy" does, in fact, mean spicy sometimes. 🤣

(It's not _that_ hot but it is like eating a serrano pepper.)

Throwing nice round pizzas is definitely not my forte, but it's still fun as heck. (Had leftover biga for making bread yesterday so decided to turn it into pizza dough today.)

Mixed greens, mozzarella, and beyond meat hot Italian 'sausage'.

Having fun w/13yo, who expressed interest in baking bread.

(The biga-based rustic bread recipe from Peter Reinhart's "Crust and Crumb").

We didn't have bread flour on hand, so the crumb is a little small, but have some for next weekend.

Farewell to the garden part 3: fried green tomatoes. (They taste better than they look. 🤓)

7yo Semi-Seriously said he wanted to learn algebra, because his big sister is in algebra 2 and he wants to do everything they do. So I've decided it would be amusing to try -- we'll just have to dynamically learn all the math leading up to it as we go. 🤣

Fractions will slow us down for a while...

Trying out real lifting shoes for the first time instead of either flat no-sole vibrams or just really stuff heeled shoes. Haven't lifted in them yet, but they feel super weird - it's like the toes are glued to the floor. Very intrigued to do squats on Friday. 🤓

For #pittsburgh power stuff: Duquesne Light has released the updated rate schedule starting Dec 1. Overall about a 6.6% increase in prices (more if you just look at supply charge). The percent potential savings from using time-of-use billing stay the same but the absolute amount increases.

The garden continues to dictate our meals.

Roasted poblano-pumpkin-black bean enchiladas.

Fortunately, the garden has good taste.

Please forgive my potty mouth, but "feels like 18f" can fuck right off until December.

Brr.

Aw. First kinda sorta snow of the year in #pittsburgh.

Some days, I decide what to cook. Other days, the garden decides what I shall cook. Today was one of those days. Happy fall!

(Thanks, garden, you did well this year, we'll miss you.)

Mmm. Just had the best arepas and tostones I've ever had (this isn't a high bar, though). Arepittas in downtown #pittsburgh. Little hole in the wall. Freaking tasty. And the kids menu is perfect.

Advantage of being a kid in the 80s: Associating the theme song from Peter Gunn with the video game Spy Hunter, not the original TV series.

Voting accomplished.

(Friends in PA, please do vote today for retaining the supreme court judges. It's important.)

Is it the government shutdown? Or a bug? The NRC's event report archive pages are broken today:
Today's copy of the 2024 archive on left, Archived copy of 2024 on right. Observe that it's skipping every other month now, whoops.

The data is still there, though:

I'm not even anti-ads. I like Amazon's approach with Kindle: *at purchase time*, you can choose a model with ads at a discount, or a model without ads. It makes the bargain very transparent. I choose to pay more and not have ads. Others choose otherwise. And that's great - b/c it's transparent!

Thank you! This was so much better than him sitting on the iPad all morning. 🤓

Two down, two to go. Second was just as easy as the first (which is good, this is the one that connects to the boiler and AC, the rest are just AC zones)

This pasted-in character has some serious anger problems and has been hulk smashing the filing cabinet drawers in her office

aggggh can't escape it. I'm doing the university's poorly-made (outsourced) research security training module and I cannot escape the TERRIFYING GENAI LAMP. What is that even?

Is it a lamp? Is it a liposuction device from 2065? Will it eat my children? Only the AI knows.

There should be a yearly one-day AWS scheduled outage day to smoke test for shit like "I bought a bed that depends 100% on us-east-1". (& all cloud providers with over $100m ARR).

"AWS outage day?"
"Yeah man, hoping my car starts driving again really soon here."
"Toilet. Won't. Flush."
"brutal."
