Always something about the first Glühwein of the year…

Been a ropey five weeks or so since the Biergärten closed, so thank feck it’s almost Christmas and I can get to poisoning my liver with Glühwein.

For all my occasional cynicism around snow, it does bring an additional light that’s welcome at this time of (and makes the commute to work on my bicycle more interesting).

…and so, the day ends as tradition dictates, with is watching the National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.

That’s the Christmas pudding, the stollen, the meat for the mince pies and a tonne of syrup made for mulled wine, too. House smells like a Christmas market. Some wee cupcakes for #BabyPferd to take to her class tomorrow, too. Think I deserve to get my feet up with a big glass of good port.

Don’t do all that much duck at home but I can’t imagine anything much better than this to put away with a nice glass of port after a whole day doing the Christmas baking. A simple enough plum sauce and mash, to put away with

Also not a fan of LEDs. Light is just all wrong (In general, not a fan of the move to plain white lights, either. Christmas is tacky. Embrace the tack! But that's an aside). Ended up switching to candles, instead, which looks lovely but is terrifying with two under-8s running around!

Very well aware that this whole bloody think is basically an affectation, the most affected thing is definitely making my own marzipan to go into the stollen.

That’s the mince pie filling done. This will just be peaking in perfection in about 12 months time.

Got the brandy down for the Christmas pudding. Would be rude not to…

There are many ways to make a table look nice at the start of an evening but I’ll judge the quality of the celebration by how bad it looks at the end of the night.

Envious of people whose kids have summer birthdays. Picnic in the park. Easy. Winter kids? Outside the dreaded soft play, not many options but I’ve harnessed the darkness. Reflective arrows that make a treasure hunt. Bunch of wee torches to find the arrows and off we go. Excelled myself.

#BabyPferd been roaming around like this, inside and in the garden, for a good 45 minutes scaring the absolute bejeebus out of anyone and everyone who gets too close. Mostly her Ma, who she’s nearly put in the hospital four or five times by now. Probably should put a stop to it but, you know…

Thank you. Gonna check this recipe!

Red would be easy enough if you are happy to buy roasted peppers in a jar but, of course, I'd never let myself away with a sensible shortcut like that!

The Rose Field (Philip Pullman): Been reading this series since my teens so impossible to review objectively. Over-complicated. Doesn’t quite flow. So much opened that went nowhere. New characters right to the end. Crushed by its own density and weight. And, yet, I still enjoyed very much.
