Matt, Pokemon Red/Blue came out in the US before the card game, but nobody really cared at first.
When the card game came out Pokemon blew up, and that made people start caring about the video games.

QotW: 1st, I saw the anime on weekday afternoons, before it became a 4Kids show. Thought it was a fun concept.
Then I saw the ads for the games in comic books. Thought "Monster collect-a-thon? Hell yeah!"
So I tracked down a Super Gameboy, just so I could play them on my SNES.
I was 19.

QotW: Not much. I still buy stuff heavily discounted on Steam for my PC. And I still have a Gamefly subscription for most of my Nintendo needs.

QotW: [2/2] The spawn was almost dead, and as it was wandering back to it's spawn point, it lingered behind the other monsters, so I jumped it on my own and barely managed to finish it off. I was rewarded for my efforts when the belt drops and won the roll on it.

QotW: [1/2] A Runed Bolster Belt in Everquest. An extremely valuable rare drop of a rare spawn. While fighting it, the fight went back and the group had to flee. I rogue vanished while the rest of the group ran to the zone line with enemies chasing.

Everybody's Golf Hot Shots isn't a mashup of two franchises. Everybody's Golf IS Hot Shots Golf. Hot Shots was just the NA name for EG.

I'd always had a computer at home, but never internet.
'97 was pretty early, lots of sites used guest books as forums.
Finding pages and communities for any subject you could think of was amazing though.
