Anthony felt the United States's biggest export was cults. Racism, capitalism at the expense of the planet's health, trucks that were so big you couldn't even see if a small child was crossing the street, not wanting to look at the truth of any situation unless the truth benefited you, the militias in the upper peninsula- those were cults. He was resentful, too, of all the cults in the news again. It seemed like thin white women with ghost blue eyes were always writing their novels about them and then going on early morning television to say things about death and dead actresses. There was the cult that a D-list celebrity had gotten into, filled with weird sex and what sounded like a lot of pressure to do Pilates.

I don't know if you are an Ezra Klein hater, but I thought this point was interesting in his interview with Emily Jashinsky
I’ve been fascinated by the problems that JD Vance and Project 2025 are posing for Donald Trump in this election. And the problem he’s facing, I think, is that he does not want to manage the coalition that he actually owns. In 2016, he didn’t have to. He was a challenger to the Republican Party. He conquered it by humiliating its leading politicians. But he wasn’t of it, and when you ask what a Trump administration would do in 2016, you were taking into account a Republican Party he didn’t control, a coalition he didn’t build. That’s not true in 2024. Now he does run the Republican Party. Now he is the owner of the MAGA coalition. But the MAGA coalition is bigger than him, and the groups in it, the people in it, they have developed more views on more issues than Donald Trump has. They have drank from weirder ideological wells than he does. This, I think, is the problem that JD Vance has posed for him. Vance was explicitly chosen to be the future of MAGA. But Vance is much more ideolo
