McKibben’s point is directionally right, even if simplified. Fossil fuels dominate global shipping ton-miles. Electrification + renewables don’t just cut CO₂ — they collapse fuel logistics chains. Energy becomes local. Trade shifts, ships don’t vanish — but power does.⚡ #disruption #EnergyTransition

House and Senate agree to make draft registration "automatic":

"This doesn’t mean that a #draft is being activated — although preparing to do so is sole purpose of SSS. This will, however, move USA closer to a draft than at any time since 1975."

This is awesome. Print is such a good way to get around a bunch of distribution (and surveillance!) mechanisms that seem otherwise mandatory in this very gross economy. It is really nice to see it spelled out like this.

It works great for us, and it'll work great for other places!
404 Media is making a print zine! About the surveillance technologies used by ICE. 16 pages, riso printed. Shipping early January. Features reworked versions of our best reporting and a few new things. We're very excited! And hope to do more if people like it:

If you’ve tracked lithium, EVs, AI, solar, China, batteries & renewables for two decades, nothing here is “unbelievable.” It’s the inevitable collision of S-curves, compounding trends and industrial scale. Not surprising — just timely. In truth, this is what the future has been signalling for years.

TSA plans to charge air travelers without ID or without REAL-ID $3B a year in extra fees for extra questioning ($45/person)

Deep dive: What this means, how it might work, and what you can do about it:

TSA Confirm.ID: TSA plans to charge air travelers without ID or without REAL-ID $3B a year in extra fees for extra questioning – Papers, Please!
Since scare tactics haven’t gotten everyone in the U.S. to sign up for REAL-ID or show ID whenever they fly, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is turning to extortion through the threat of a new $45 fee to fly without “acceptable” ID.

More than 2,500 Starbucks workers are on strike. They’re demanding dignity: fair pay, safe conditions, a contract that respects their labor.

It’s time their voices are heard at the same volume as CEOs earning millions.

1/ Congrats to @404media.co whose reporting on Airlines Reporting Corporation's selling traveler data to LEO and US gov officials has led ARC to end the practice.

Airlines Will Shut Down Program That Sold Your Flights Records to Government
The move comes after intense pressure from lawmakers and 404 Media’s months-long reporting about the airline industry's data selling practices.

BEVs +20% YoY. PHEVs –22%. Exports +326%. Battery installs +50.8% YTD to 258 GWh. BYD’s full vertical integration — from cells to chips to robots — is redefining scale. It’s the manufacturing vanguard of the energy & transport transition, and the demand curve isn’t priced in. ⚡🔋🌏 #Lithium #LFP

BYD sold 480,186 NEVs in November, marking its highest monthly figure this year but down 5.25 percent year-on-year.

EV/NEV share in China is already 50%+ — not 40. And exports? China sent 6.4m cars abroad in 2024, crushing Japan’s 4.2m and Germany’s 3.2m. Domestic dominance + an export explosion = the #lithium demand inflection. 2025–2030 is about to vaporise every outdated forecast. 🔋🌏 #LFP #EVS #BEV #Disruption

BESS deployments are up 40% YTD. 2025 is unmistakably the breakout year for BESS. The economics are now so strong — and PV growth so explosive — that storage isn’t optional anymore. It’s a required limb of every future energy ecosystem. Solar builds the engine. #BESS makes it run day and night. #LFP

China hit 1,003 TWh of solar by October — and this still isn’t the steep part of the S-curve. This is the warm-up. Solar doubled in 2 yrs, installs are exploding, #BESS is hitting price floors, curtailment is becoming a storage goldmine. The next doubling? 12–16 months. “Holy shit” phase loading. ⚡

We’re about to hit the phase of the S-curve where the world goes from “fast” to “holy shit.” Solar’s doubling on a 24-month cycle — but the real elephant in the room is #BESS. As storage scales, the grid stops being a bottleneck and starts becoming a battery-backed solar engine. #EnergyTransition

EIA’s see “forecasts,” U.S. coal magically find a “stable base” from 2032 onward. I call bullshit on that. Nothing about economics, grid evolution, or policy supports it.
Coal isn’t stabilizing — it’s terminal. What you’re seeing there is just the long tail of a dying industry on life support. ⚰️
