We're properly funding local councils so they can deliver the services families depend on.

This week I had the privilege of planting a stake in Parliament's Constituency Garden of Remembrance to commemorate the fallen of Chipping Barnet.

We will never forget their sacrifice, commitment, and bravery – it is through their service that we enjoy the freedoms we hold dear today.

Very much enjoyed participating in this event hosted by @uclpolicylab.bsky.social at #Lab25 conference yesterday.

Lots of interesting and thoughtful ideas from both panel and audience alike on how we can spread opportunity across the country - this govt is committed to making this happen!

Barnet Police Station should be open to our community.

Great to meet with residents at Osidge Library. These one-to-one surgeries are a vital part of the job.

Do you have an issue or concern you want to report? Please get in touch and my team and I will figure out the best way to help you.

Wonderful to visit Oak Hill School and meet headteacher Kevin Grant to discuss their excellent work.

I had the chance to meet some of the dedicated staff, and incredibly bright and engaged students. I’m really impressed by how they're teaching and nurturing their 50 pupils.

My first remarks to the House of Commons as Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury.

We're lifting the burden of the cost of living crisis, backing those who want to invest in the future of this country, and helping everyday families.

This week I was appointed Exchequer Secretary to HM Treasury - an honour I don't take lightly.
This is a role that allows me to champion Chipping Barnet at the highest levels of government whilst continuing to fight for better living standards and opportunities for everyone, in every part of the UK.

Congratulations to all of you in Barnet receiving your A-Level, BTEC or T-Level results today.

I wish all students across Chipping Barnet the very best with the next chapter of your lives!

Books are back at High Barnet station!

Thanks to everyone who got in touch with me and Anne Clarke AM about this - it's great to see the bookshelf safely reinstated. Next time you're passing through the station, do bring a book to share with your neighbours!

Glad to be on Newsnight last night - made sure to mention our fantastic Chipping Barnet constituency!

Growing the economy is the only way we can raise living standards in Barnet and across the UK, and make us all better off. Watch the episode in full: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...

What a privilege to celebrate the Barnet Environment Centre's 50th anniversary.

Had a fantastic time speaking at their birthday party and touring the nature reserve. Amazing to think over 2,500 children visited last year - a wonderful place for young people in Barnet to connect with nature!

On the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe, we remember the efforts of many Britons just like Ruth, their sacrifices, and the crucial lessons we can continue to learn from today. #VE80

Visited Mill Hill electricity substation with (the ace!) James from National Grid.

Learned why those huge transmission towers are actually more efficient and cheaper than underground cables.

Britain's engineering heritage on full display right here in our constituency!

Honoured to be included in the Northern Agenda email! Let's get those trams running.
April 9, 2025 at 1:39 PM
Today I was pleased to secure a personal commitment from the Chancellor on this.

In her own words, “Under this government, we’ll put that investment in and get those trams running."
April 8, 2025 at 3:41 PM
This stuff isn’t hard.

Over 20 French cities have built tram networks since 2000.

In Germany, there are now no fewer than 60 cities with a tram.

The UK – falling further and further behind when it comes to urban public transport.
April 8, 2025 at 3:41 PM
And large cities and their nearby towns in the rest of the country aren’t fulfilling their potential, and have been falling further behind economically (with the exception of a few places e.g. Manchester and Edinburgh).

As a country, we used to be good at building our future – but for too long now we’ve blocked it before it even has a chance to arrive.

But hope springs eternal!

In 2012, a new government approved a new trolleybus scheme for Leeds.

The Transport Secretary heralded the scheme as “transformational for growth and jobs in West Yorkshire”.

Not a proper tram – but a big step in the right direction.

After years of dither, in 2005, the Leeds Supertram project was cancelled, with rising costs & public opposition both cited.

The cost? Less than £1bn in today’s money.

Can’t think about this for too long without getting angry.

But then followed abject failure.

My theory: national politicians were soothed by high growth rates, and so weren’t worrying enough about the long-term impact of under-investment.

Public sector investment was way too low in the 1990s and early-2000s.

In most countries, the city could have just decided to build one itself.

But centralisation meant waiting on Westminster.

And Westminster had finally stepped up.
