Everything in culture is a Rorschach Test these days. You may see a fearless first amendment warrior or an enemy to your fragile world view. Or maybe just a TV host. I see a loyal friend and one of the most decent, honorable people I've ever known. I pray for him and for us all. Crazy, scary times.

Very sad to learn of the passing of the brilliant and biting Tom Lehrer at 97. Even though he stopping writing and performing satirical songs a half century or more ago, I derived great joy knowing that he still walked among us. His work will forever remain the gold standard.

Born on this day, May 12, 1937, one of the most significant influences on what I believe comedy can be as an art form… George Carlin. The greatest thrill of my brief stand up career was getting to open for him. After the gig, he gave me his phone number and said that we were “brothers in arms.”

Born 99 years ago today, the irrepressible Don Rickles. I have fond memories of him from when I was a kid. While he was savagely funny on stage, he was a kind, sincere, warm, wonderful man off stage.

So agree. Loved him in Real Genius. He was so great in Top Secret as well. When I was at IFC, he was in Spoils of Babylon. I was thrilled that we got him.

Today Carl Gottlieb turns 87. He has an Emmy for writing on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. He wrote the screenplay for Jaws. He co-wrote The Jerk with @stevemartinreally.bsky.social (in which he also appeared as “Iron Balls McGinty.) But above all, he’s a wonderful guy. Happy birthday Carl!
