Tbh it was a bit tricky to gauge as there were lots of small group discussions, which I wasn't part of, but certainly some teachers were v positive about it. I think it is worth pursuing further (not least because it's interesting), but ultimately the people that win the tender will call the shots

Thanks @arthurjchapman.bsky.social I'll try and find a copy - Ian was my PGCE tutor and we co-wrote my first article in Teaching History in 1993!

Yes, I'd heard that they were challenging to make, it seems like that may have been the reason why they didn't last. Can you explain what DBQs are?

You may be right, I've been having conversations with some of the Honorary Fellows which is where my info came from.

The style of questions can be brought up to date, and can involve inference, utility, cross-referencing and constructing narratives etc, and it will do away with those awful questions like 'what question would you ask about source a?'

Probably most of you haven't heard of the unseen paper. That's because it preceded the GCSE exams and wasn't taken up in the new specs. It involved students studying about 15 sources on a topic (I've seen papers on the Blitz and the School Strike of 1911) and answering a range of questions.

I'm also going to make a radical suggestion to cut content in the History GCSE - bring back the unseen source paper! It eliminates the need for revision, and allows disciplinary skills to come to the fore.

Cool! I just did a bit of research about Fulham Palace Garden, it turns out that Bishop Henry Compton sent seeds from the garden across to William Penn to try and grow them in Pennsylvania. There was also American trees planted in Fulham.

And we finished with Debbie Hayden's students' award winning historical garden that drew on their knowledge of the Holocaust to create a beautiful and inspiring place of reflection ...
